Sometimes the hardest part of preaching isn’t explaining the text.

It’s knowing how to invite a student to respond without trying to manufacture a moment. Because we’ve all felt that tension.

You want students to take Jesus seriously. You want them to repent, trust, confess, pray, surrender, reconcile, and obey.

But you also know tears are not always repentance, and silence does not always mean nothing happened.

This week’s SSM Journal article is about giving Gospel invitations with clarity, care, and confidence.

Not manipulation, pressure, or emotional theater.

Just faithful shepherding that helps students truly respond to Jesus.

Fathers matter more than they realize.

Not because moms don’t.
Not because every family looks the same.
Not because every dad has done it perfectly.

But because God designed fathers to help shape identity, faith, strength, safety, and direction in the home.

And pastors, this matters for us too.

Men often go where they feel needed, not where they feel scolded. So instead of only telling fathers what they are not doing, the church has an opportunity to call them up.

Give them meaningful roles.
Invite them to pray.
Let them mentor.
Celebrate faithful fathers.
Tell stories worth imitating.
Help dads believe their presence matters.

A present father can shape a child’s life for generations.

Happy Father’s Day to the dads, grandfathers, spiritual fathers, coaches, mentors, and faithful men who keep showing up.

You matter.

One of the hardest parts of stepping into a new church is resisting the urge to prove yourself too quickly.

You may see things you want to change, have ideas, or just want momentum.

But healthy ministry is usually built slower than we want.
Sometimes the most spiritual thing a new youth pastor can do is listen longer, learn the culture, love people well, and earn trust before trying to overhaul everything. A church does not need a hero in month one. They need a shepherd who plans to stay.

Why Every Church Should Care About Student Ministry

Student ministry isn’t just a youth pastor’s responsibility—it’s a church-wide mission.

In a conversation on the ChurchLeaders podcast, I shared why reaching and equipping teenagers should be a priority for every church.

Here are 5 reasons every church should invest in students:

✅ Teenagers can reach people adults can’t.

Students naturally have relationships with classmates, teammates, and friends. They don’t need to build bridges—they’re already connected. They simply need to be equipped to share the Gospel.

✅ Evangelism accelerates spiritual growth.

When teenagers share their faith, they learn to trust Christ, depend on prayer, and prioritize what matters most. Gospel conversations become catalysts for discipleship.

✅ The next generation is the church today.

Young people aren’t merely future church members. God can use them right now to influence their schools, teams, families, and communities for Christ.

✅ A Gospel-focused youth ministry impacts entire families.

Greg shared how, after being equipped to share his faith as a young teen, he eventually had the privilege of leading his own mother to Christ. When students are mobilized, entire households can be transformed.

✅ Healthy churches make evangelism everyone’s responsibility.

The most effective student ministries aren’t isolated programs. They are supported by pastors, parents, volunteers, and church members who model prayer, evangelism, and discipleship.

Bottom line:

If you want a church that thrives for generations, don’t just entertain teenagers—equip them to advance the Gospel. When students are trained, trusted, and unleashed, they can become one of the greatest evangelistic forces in your church.

You don’t have to have all the answers to help anxious students well.

But students do need leaders who are willing to slow down, listen carefully, and point them to Jesus with both grace and truth.

The student who suddenly gets quiet.
The one who slips out before small groups.
The high-achiever quietly unraveling behind the scenes.

We all know a student like that.

Anxiety is shaping this generation, and student ministry cannot afford to ignore it or oversimplify it.
