In 2018, I visited Naples, Italy, to see one of the most remarkable works of art I've ever encountered — Giuseppe Sanmartino's Veiled Christ. Carved from a single block of marble, the sculpture shows Jesus draped beneath a veil so lifelike it's hard to believe it's stone. And here's what struck me most: the veil doesn't hide Jesus. It makes you look more closely. Beneath it, you can see his wounds, his suffering, the stillness of death.
That became a meditation for me on how God reveals himself. We often want a God who is obvious — unmistakable, powerful, clear. But in the Christian faith, God reveals himself most completely in the vulnerability of the wounded Christ. What looks like weakness is love. What looks like defeat becomes victory. What looks like an ending is already becoming a beginning.
The veil invites us to look more closely — and to discover that sometimes God is most fully revealed where we least expect to find him.
