A RESPONSIVE PRAYER: MEETING GOD IN THE WATER WE DIDN'T CHOOSE
Leader: Lord, you spoke, and we heard you.
People: And we got up — and went the other way.
Leader: We have pointed our lives toward Tarshish,
People: paid the fare, gone below, and fallen asleep to the sound of our own storms.
Leader: Lord, we have said true things about you and lived like they weren't true.
People: Meet us in the dark water we didn't choose.
Leader: We have known your mercy and withheld it from others.
People: We have asked for grace we were not willing to give.
Leader: Forgive us for the calendars that never had room for you,
People: for the conversations we avoided, the truths we wouldn't tell, the people we decided didn't deserve our mercy.
Leader: Lord, we have said true things about you and lived like they weren't true.
People: Meet us in the dark water we didn't choose.
Leader: And when the storm you allowed catches up with us —
People: when we finally stop running, and the truth costs us something —
Leader: let us find what Jonah found:
People: that even the deep is not too deep for you, and even the dark has not driven you away.
Leader: Lord, we have said true things about you and lived like they weren't true.
People: Meet us in the dark water we didn't choose.
Leader: So we bring you our Tarshish this morning — every place we've run instead of answered.
People: We lay it down in this water, trusting it is not the end of our story with you.
(A moment of silence as the water continues to be poured.)
Leader: Provide for us, Lord, as you provided for Jonah—
People: not comfort we would have chosen, but presence we did not expect.
All: Lord, we have said true things about you and lived like they weren't true. Meet us in the dark water we didn't choose. Amen.
