Radiant Church Fairbanks

Radiant Church Fairbanks We are gathering at 949 Farmers Loop Road at 11 am on Sunday. We set out to learn to be the church and not just a people who attend a Sunday morning event.

Radiant Church began in August of 2007 as a small group of seven people in the home of the Richardson's. Over the last few years Radiant Church has had slow and steady growth as we have learned how to live out our faith in Jesus Christ in authentic community. We now gather together on Sunday afternoons at 4 pm at 2755 Horner ct. and during the week in community groups in different homes.

Romans 6:1-4 - Paul pauses his letter to confront a lie that infected many churches of his day - that the message of the Gospel rooted in grace freely gave permission for people to sin. Paul knew there would indeed be people coming out of pagan backgrounds who might actually believe that their sin really didn't matter and that they did have license to sin.

In order for the lie to be truth, either the grace of God through Jesus really isn't powerful enough to overthrow the reign of sin and death or sin really doesn't matter. Either possibility undermines the promises God fulfilled through the death and resurrection of Jesus.

The way Paul helps the Church combat these lies is by anchoring believers in baptism. Our water baptism is a core reminder of our spiritual baptism. We died with Jesus. We are also resurrected with Jesus. All the promises and truths of the Gospel are tied to these two statements.

We can battle Satan and his lies about grace and the ensuing temptation to sin by proclaiming, as Martin Luther did, "Get away from me! I'm baptized!"

In Romans 5:12-21, Paul continues to show the stunning realities of the life of faith that make someone right with God. Throughout these verses, he compares and contrasts the reign of sin and death with the reign of grace and life.

When we live under the reign of someone or something, we are under its power and authority. Paul describes in detail how because of one man, Adam, humanity was completely subjugated to death. Jesus came as a greater man, a greater ruler, and with the greater reign of grace. Jesus' reign not only counteracted the effects of the reign of death but overthrew the reign of death completely - for everyone who puts their faith in Him. When our faith is in Jesus, we are under His rule and authority so that is where we dwell.

In Colossians 3, Paul describes how we are called to put to death our old ways of living that fell under the authority of death and how we are to put on the new way of living in Jesus.

We are called to live in the victory of the reign of grace and, as conquerors, bring that victory to people who are still living underneath the rule and reign of death.

Romans 5:1-11 - Paul's opening statement in Romans 5, "Therefore, since we have been justified…," sets us off on a journey to see that our faith, which makes us right before God, has fundamentally changed everything about who we are and how we live our lives.

The foundational change (read this slowly) is that now we have a real HOPE because we now have PEACE with God, ACCESS to a relationship with Him, and His LOVE is now imprinted on our souls by His Spirit.

We must be so careful not to misplace this hope or even lose it completely to cynicism. When cynicism takes hold, it affects how we engage the world around us. Check yourself. Have you become cynical? We all experience this from time to time.

Romans 5 calls us back to recovering our hope and reminds us of the joy and power that come only from hope in Jesus. The power of hope can take us through any trial, through any discouragement, through any let-down in this life. It will even take us through death itself. When hope grips our heart, we have grace for the people around us, we keep fighting to follow Jesus, and we can rejoice always.

It's time for us as the Church to recover this hope!

Psalm 89 was written by Ethan - a singer in David's court (1 Chronicles 15:17). He was compared in wisdom to Solomon (1 Kings 4:31). Having witnessed the height of David's kingdom, he also saw it come crashing down when David's son Absolom took it over.

Ethan's knowledge and praise of God run deep through verses 1-37 as he recalls God's majesty and faithfulness. BUT doubt, questioning and deep anguish take over in verses 38-51 as it seems evident to Ethan that God is hiding from His people and has forgotten His promises.

THEN, in a beautiful turning back in spite of what he can or can't understand about his present circumstances, Ethan dares to keep praising and the Psalm ends with, "Blessed be the Lord forever! Amen and Amen."

As deep as Ethan's despair went, Jesus took on an even deeper despair through the events surrounding His death. YET, He still conquered death and walked out of the grave! In His resurrection is our hope and our victory.

Remember, when your version of God's kingdom fails, God has not failed nor has His kingdom. Ethan sets an example for us. Know God deeply. Praise Him deeply. And when all the evidence may suggest that God has failed or not kept His promises, dare to keep praising.
