🎉 WELCOME TO FCC, ETHAN! 🎉

We are excited to announce that Ethan McGowan has been affirmed by 100% of those participating to serve as our next Student Minister at First Christian Church!

We are so grateful for the prayers, unity, and encouragement that have surrounded this process, and we’re excited for this next chapter of ministry at FCC.

Please join us in welcoming Ethan, Whitney, Madison, and Elijah to the FCC family! We can’t wait to see how God uses Ethan as we continue investing in the next generation and helping students faithfully follow Jesus.

God is faithful, and we’re excited for what’s ahead!

Grace should change the way we see people.

It’s easy to look at someone else’s failures, choices, or struggles and begin deciding what they deserve. But the gospel reminds us of something humbling:

We needed rescue too.

We weren’t saved because we got everything right. We were saved because Jesus stepped into our brokenness and gave us what we could never earn for ourselves.

James reminds us that there is only One qualified to sit in the Judge’s seat—and it isn’t us.

“God alone, who gave the law, is the Judge. He alone has the power to save or to destroy.” — James 4:12

Maybe remembering the grace we’ve received should make us much slower to condemn and much quicker to extend that same grace to others.

People who know how much they’ve been forgiven shouldn’t be eager to pick up the gavel.

We often think resisting the enemy means surviving the really big temptations.

But sometimes resistance looks much more ordinary.

It’s refusing to feed the anger.
Stopping the judgment before it becomes bitterness.
Turning away from what we know we shouldn’t see.
Choosing humility when pride tells us to prove ourselves.

James gives us both a command and a promise:

“Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. Come close to God, and God will come close to you.” — James 4:7–8

Notice how closely those two things sit together.

We don’t resist the enemy by simply trying harder to be stronger than him. We resist by continually positioning ourselves closer to God.

Give the enemy no ground.

And when temptation comes, don’t just run away from something.

Run toward Someone.

Humility isn’t believing you have nothing to offer.

It’s recognizing that everything you have to offer is best placed in the hands of God.

Our natural tendency is to want our way, trust our thoughts, follow our instincts, and maintain control. But following Jesus continually invites us to surrender those things and say, “Your way over mine.”

That’s not weakness. That’s dependence.

And James gives us an incredible promise when we choose that posture:

“Come close to God, and God will come close to you.” — James 4:8

We don’t humble ourselves before God because we are worthless. We humble ourselves because He is worthy.

And the closer we draw to Him, the more our lives begin to look like His.

It’s easy to recognize the brokenness of the world around us. It’s harder to recognize how much of that world we’ve allowed to shape what’s happening within us.

We compare. We choose sides. We fight to be right. We look for recognition. We become jealous of what someone else has. And before long, we can find ourselves looking to the very things that divide us to somehow make us whole.

But politics can’t save us.
Social media can’t fulfill us.
Success can’t give us our identity.
And getting everything we want won’t give us the life we were created for.

James reminds us of a much better way:

“God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble.” — James 4:6

The answer isn’t finding a better version of what the world offers. It’s humbly recognizing that the world was never capable of giving us what only Jesus can.

The world can’t help us, fix us, or save us. But Jesus can.

This process has been diligently covered in prayer by our Elders, Search Team, and staff, and we’re excited to invite our entire church family into these next steps.

Then join us Sunday, September 6, as Ethan preaches in both morning services, followed by congregational affirmation.

Apparently it takes three wise guys to talk about wisdom. 😏

But James 3 reminds us that being smart and being wise aren’t necessarily the same thing.

Godly wisdom isn’t proven by how much we know—or even by always being right. It shows up in how we live, how we treat people, how we handle disagreement, and in the fruit our lives produce.

In Episode 19 of Becoming Us, we’re asking:

Can you be right and still not be wise?
What’s really driving the decisions we make?
And how can we tell whether the wisdom we’re following is actually coming from God?

FCC is hosting a Leaders Save Lives Blood Drive on Sunday, August 30, from 9:00 a.m.–2:00 p.m., coordinated by local high school student Ava Whicker.

Through the American Red Cross Leaders Save Lives Initiative, area high school students organize blood drives to raise awareness, encourage donations, and make a real difference in their communities. Ava has set a goal of 40 donors—and she’s almost halfway there!

Here’s where we come in, FCC. This is a simple, tangible way to live out Others First and support a young leader who is stepping up to serve her community.

The next generation matters. And investing in them takes all of us.

We’re excited to introduce Ethan McGowan, our candidate for Student Minister at FCC! Ethan has been unanimously recommended by our Student Minister Search Team and Elders, and we’re looking forward to giving our church family the opportunity to get to know Ethan, his wife Whitney, and their children, Madison and Elijah.

Join us Sunday, August 30, from 5:30–7:00pm for a Meet & Greet Open House at FCC. Come whenever it works for you, grab some snacks, meet the McGowan family, and hear more about Ethan’s heart for discipling students and equipping them to impact their schools and communities for Christ.

Then, on Sunday, September 6, Ethan will be with us for morning worship, with a congregational affirmation following both services.

This is about more than filling a ministry position. It’s about faithfully investing in the next generation and preparing them to carry the Gospel into the places God has already put them.

We’re looking forward together—and believing the best things are still ahead.
