Take a moment, won't you, and mentally revisit all the physical places you have visited over time. Could you mark some as more spiritually significant than others; surely so as our worship spaces come to mind.

Now take the same memory jaunt but this time, apply a moral filter - what places you have visited elicit feelings of embarrassment, sorrow, or even shame? You may never want to return to those places. Or maybe you're repeatedly drawn back to them, in your mind, at least. And what might that be pointing to in your life?

As a parish, we crowded right in to hear the speeches and witness the breaking of ground where the memorial of the expulsion of Chinese people was to be built. Now, it's ready for us to return to the corner of First and E streets in Eureka with a different set of expectations. But before you go, prepare yourself to take in all the symbolism of its features. The North Coast Journal has given us a guide for coloring in some of the feelings which might bubble up. Perhaps the memorial is destined to become "one of those places" in your life. Then what to do with those feelings ...

Have you followed the construction on the southeast corner of First and E streets? It is the Eureka Chinatown Monument, which commemorates the story of Eureka Chinese residents who were violently driven out of their homes and businesses in February 1885. While a clear improvement from the site’s f...

Dear Friends,
Last year, I shared with you my early translations of Hermann Hesse's essay on St. Francis of Assisi in the monthly Chronicles (from March 2025 to September 2025). Now, a year later, after tinkering with the translation and adding some more components, the text has been published as Francis of Assisi and Related Writings by Hermann Hesse. The book includes a Foreword by Darleen Pryds, Associate Professor of Christian Spirituality and History at the Franciscan School of Theology at UC San Diego. Darleen, who was my doctoral advisor at the GTU, has recently retired; and I've included a brief excerpt of her foreword below.

Along with my translation of the essay, the book also includes
- my translation of a short story Hesse wrote about Francis as a young boy
- Hesse's review of a translation of The Little Flowers of St. Francis
- the text of a presentation I gave at Ensō Village in Healdsburg titled "The Zen of St. Francis"
- and a sermon I preached on the empathy of Francis

And that's not all! The book also includes original art by beloved members of Christ Church and St. Alban's: Sanford Pyron, Leslie Allen, and Jan Ramsey!

I'm excited that this book has been made available in time for the 800th anniversary of the passing ("Transitus") of St. Francis, which we will be celebrating with Bishop Megan on Saturday October 3rd at 11 AM (with confirmations and blessings of the outdoor labyrinth and solar panels) and also on Sunday October 4th at 8 and 10:30 AM, to conclude the Season of Creation.

My plan was to discuss this book at the adult forum this Sunday at 9:15 AM. However, my bulk order of copies will not arrive until mid September, so I'm going to postpone that forum. However, if you're interested in purchasing a copy sooner rather than later, you can order one here: https://apocryphilepress.com/book/francis-of-assisi-and-related-writings-by-hermann-hesse/ You can also ask your favorite local bookstore to order one (or ten!) for you.

Since Francis created the first live Nativity scene, the book would also be a great Christmas gift for friends and family; and I'll be selling and signing books at Eureka Books on Saturday December 5 at 6 PM.

I hope you enjoy this offering of a rare meeting between one of the twentieth century’s greatest writers and one of history’s most beloved saints; and I look forward to discussing it with you soon.

Pace e Bene,

Fr. Daniel +

Read Merry Phillips's "My Word" in today's Times-Standard:

"As a parishioner at Christ Church, and a resident of Eureka, I am proud of the warm and welcoming hospitality that was extended to Vox Aurea and grateful to all members of the community who were so generous with their time and gifts. I am also impressed by how impactful this kind of act of 'truth-telling' is and how important it is to know all parts of our history."

“This talented group of young Finnish singers had a strong desire to visit Eureka, the setting of the opera’s story.”
