Counting the Omer – First Fruits to Shavuot
May 21, 2023 - Day 43 - Psalm 119:161-168

"And you shall count for yourselves from the day after the Sabbath...Count fifty days to the day after the seventh Sabbath; then you shall offer a new grain offering to the Lord." Leviticus 23: 15-16
The Counting of the Omer covers a fifty-day period of time from the Feast of First Fruits until Shavuot (Pentecost). Beginning with the day of First Fruits, each subsequent day is counted for seven complete weeks, plus one day - fifty days. During the Counting of the Omer, we "count up" to the Feast of Shavuot (the 50th Day) with each day of counting, adding to the growing expectation of what Pentecost will bring. Join with us at the Branch as each day we are looking to Pentecost during the counting of the Omer, each day we will post a verse from Psalms 119 to read and meditate upon, causing us to review the condition of our hearts before God.

Psalms 119:161-168
161 Princes persecute me without a cause, But my heart stands in awe of Your Word.
162 I rejoice at Your Word As one who finds great treasure.
163 I hate and abhor lying, But I love Your law.
164 Seven times a day I praise You, Because of Your righteous judgments.
165 Great peace have those who love Your law, And nothing causes them to stumble.
166 LORD, I hope for Your salvation, And I do Your commandments.
167 My soul keeps Your testimonies, And I love them exceedingly.
168 I keep Your precepts and Your testimonies, For all my ways are before You.
"Again, the kingdom of heaven is like treasure hidden in a field, which a man found and hid; and for joy over it he goes and sells all that he has and buys that field. "Again, the kingdom of heaven is like a merchant seeking beautiful pearls, who, when he had found one pearl of great price, went and sold all that he had and bought it."
Matthew 13:44-46
King David rejoiced in the Torah of God and compared it to finding great treasure. In the Torah, David found a peace that steadied his soul, the truth that awed his heart, and the hope of Salvation in the LORD. As the King searched the Torah, meditated on the Word, and applied the precepts to his life, he perceived the wonders of the treasure God had given. It was David's steadfastness and determination that revealed the true worth of the Torah, and directed his footsteps in the commands of God.
The imagery of finding hidden treasure has a powerful impact on people. Almost by definition, this treasure must be sought out; it is not laying on the surface or clearly visible to all who pass by. Yeshua used this imagery of hidden treasure to describe the Kingdom of Heaven. In His parable, you can imagine countless people walking through the field, perhaps hurrying to another destination, passing by the hidden treasure and missing the value reserved for the seeker. The field itself did not appear valuable, but what was hidden beneath the surface rendered the field priceless, and worth surrendering every other possession to obtain the treasure.
How many people walked along the path with Yeshua, listened to His teaching, and even witnessed His miracles, but did not perceive the treasure of the Kingdom within Him. By seeing only the surface, we can miss the hidden value, and looking with human judgement, we can be blinded to heavenly treasure.
Yeshua, His Kingdom, and the Word, Treasure given by God, priceless and incomparable. To the casual observer, their worth may not be perceived, but to the seeker, the hungry, the humble, and the redeemed, they are a gift beyond human value. They are the pearl of great price, the very Word uttered by the LORD, and the Salvation of the Living God.

"It is he who will go as a forerunner before Him in the spirit and power of Elijah, TO TURN THE HEARTS OF THE FATHERS BACK TO THE CHILDREN, and the disobedient to the attitude of the righteous, so as to make ready a people prepared for the Lord."
