Interesting thoughts on our theme and scripture for this Sunday…

What does it mean to grow in faith?

Romans 4:13-25 offers an answer that is deeper than simply believing harder or being more certain. Paul points to Abraham, not as someone who never doubted, but as someone who learned to trust God's promise even when every visible piece of evidence suggested otherwise.

When we read this passage closely, Paul is making a radical argument. The promise God gave Abraham was not earned through obedience to religious law. It was received through trust. The inheritance came through faith, not achievement.

This matters because Paul is speaking to communities struggling with belonging. Who gets included in God's family? Those who have the right background? The right traditions? The right credentials?

Paul's answer is no.

Abraham became the ancestor of faith before the law existed. The promise was always bigger than rules, boundaries, and human systems. God's covenant was rooted in grace from the beginning.

The deeper meaning emerges in verses 17-21. Paul describes Abraham as believing in "the God who gives life to the dead and calls into existence the things that do not exist."

Faith, then, is not pretending reality is different than it is.

Abraham knew he was old. Sarah knew she was old. They understood the impossibility of the situation. Faith was not denial. Faith was trusting that God's creative power was greater than the limitations they could see.

This is where many of us live today.

We look at broken relationships and wonder if reconciliation is possible.
We look at injustice and wonder if change can happen.
We look at ourselves and wonder whether growth, healing, or transformation is still available.

Romans reminds us that faith is not confidence in ourselves. It is confidence in the God who creates new possibilities where none seem to exist.

Paul concludes by connecting Abraham's story to Jesus. The same God who fulfilled the promise to Abraham is the God who raised Jesus from the dead. The resurrection becomes the ultimate sign that God's future is never limited by our present circumstances.

Growing in faith is learning to trust that God's promises are larger than our fears, stronger than our limitations, and more enduring than the obstacles before us.

Faith does not ignore reality.

Faith sees reality clearly and still chooses hope.

Greetings! We’re excited to share information about Ecumenical Ministries of Oregon’s upcoming Collins Lecture: A Conversation with John Fugelsang on the Separation of Church and Hate. The lecture will be held on Saturday, June 6, at 7 p.m., at Trinity Episcopal Cathedral in Portland, but we are pleased to announce and invite you to attend a live streamed “virtual” lecture at the Eugene Community of Christ congregation (1485 Gilham Rd, Eugene). You do not need to purchase individual tickets. We have ordered the live stream link. We will gather at 6:45p.m. Following the conclusion of the lecture, we will have refreshments and conversation in the social hall.

John Fugelsang is an actor, comedian and host of “Tell Me Everything” on SiriusXM Progress. He is also the author of the New York Times bestseller, “Separation of Church and Hate: A Sane Person’s Guide to Taking Back the Bible from Fundamentalists, Fascists and Flock-Fleecing Frauds.” Fugelsang uses humor and biblical scholarship to challenge far-right Christian ideologies, such as Christian nationalism, and argues for a return to the core teachings of Jesus–love, mercy and service.
