On Mother’s Day, preachers and guest speakers frequently offer messages from very familiar passages of scripture: Proverbs 31, “Who can find a virtuous woman…?” Some will reference the world’s first mother, Eve. Some will talk about Hannah, the mother of the great prophet Samuel, Elizabeth, the New Testament mother of John the Baptist, Mary, the mother of Jesus, and some might even share a message about Lois and Eunice, the mother and grandmother of Paul’s young protégé, Timothy. Rarely, however, will we hear a Mother’s Day message about Saul’s concubine, Rizpah – a low level “quasi wife” with no authority, no legal standing, and in the eyes of many, no worth. Yet Rizpah understood the shame, the disgrace, and the curse of allowing her murdered sons’ bodies to be left for food for vultures. Although thought of as “less than,” and viewed by society as a social “throw away,” Rizpah proved to be one of the most honorable and subsequently revered woman and mother in the Bible. She was a “Vulture Chaser!” To hear more about this intriguing, bodacious, and resilient mother, listen to Pastor Chris’ message, “Vulture Chasers.” Restoration Ministries of Greater Cleveland, Rev.
