π£ "More Than Fishing:
A St. John Youth Teachable Moment"
The ClichΓ©:
"Give a man a fish, and you feed him for a day. Teach a man to fish, and you feed him for a lifetime."
These photos are (courtesy of Missionary Carolyn Wallace with grandson Carson), beautifully illustrates the wisdom behind the saying.
Meaning:
Providing someone with a fish meets an immediate need, but teaching them how to fish gives them the knowledge and skills to provide for themselves in the future.
β¨οΈ Caption 1
The moment wasn't just about catching fish β it was about learning patience, responsibility, and a life skill. A fish may feed him for a day, but teaching him how to fish can benefit him for a lifetime.
Biblical Principle:
While this exact quote is not found in the Bible, it aligns with biblical teachings about diligence, stewardship, and equipping others.
2 Thessalonians 3:10 (KJV)
"For even when we were with you, this we commanded you, that if any would not work, neither should he eat."
β¨οΈ Caption 2
Every cast is a lesson. Every moment is an investment. The greatest gift isn't what we give our childrenβit's what we teach them.
"Give a child a fish, and you feed him for a day. Teach a child to fish, and you feed him for a lifetime."
β¨οΈ Caption 3 (Spiritual Reflection)
As Missionary Wallace watched her grandchild fishing by the water, she was probably reminded that life is about more than providing for today. God calls us to teach, mentor, and prepare the next generation for tomorrow.
2 Timothy 2:2 (KJV)
"And the things that thou hast heard of me among many witnesses, the same commit thou to faithful men, who shall be able to teach others also."
Proverbs 22:6 (KJV)
"Train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old, he will not depart from it."
As Believers in Christ, everything is Ministry:
"Giving helps a person through a moment, but teaching and discipling them can change their life."
Anyone can meet a temporary need, but true love equips someone to succeed without you. Just as we teach a child to fish, we must teach them faith, character, wisdom, and dependence on Godβbecause skills may sustain them in life, but God's Word will sustain them for eternity. π£ππ½π
