We are so thankful to have received the certifications as an Age-Friendly Congregation! Thank you yo Pastor Linda for completing this and leading us through this!
What does an Age-Friendly congregation mean?
According to Holston's website, "This training course which provides practical tools and theological insights to help congregations reframe aging, embrace accessibility, strengthen intergenerational connections, and promote physical, mental, and spiritual wellness is a step toward becoming a church and conference who actively practices welcoming persons of all ages with God's grace and love"

At Centenary UMC, we believe that the church doors should open wide to the realities of our world, offering grace, safety, and sanctuary to everyone who walks through them. Christ’s ministry was defined by meeting people exactly where they were, providing healing without judgment, and fiercely protecting human life.

In that spirit of unconditional grace, inspired partnership with Unicoi County Prevention Coalition, we have installed a public Naloxone (Narcan) box on our church grounds. This is the second location of a Narcan box in Unicoi County, with the first location being at Unicoi County Care & Share. We are so grateful for all of the partnerships that have made this possible!

An overdose reversal kit; is a tool of resurrection. It is a physical reminder that no life is beyond saving, no struggle is too heavy to be met with mercy, and every single person who steps onto our property is a beloved child of God.

By placing this resource here, we are putting our faith into action through our commitment to:

Love Boldly: We refuse to allow stigma, shame, or fear to dictate who receives care. To love boldly means showing up for our neighbors in their darkest, most vulnerable moments, making it clear that at Centenary, you are worthy of life and safety.
Serve Joyfully: True service means protecting the health and wholeness of our entire community—including those facing the heavy burden of substance use disorder. We find deep joy in being a beacon of hope and a place for new beginnings for Erwin.
Lead Courageously: Leading like Christ means standing on the margins and being willing to take the first step. By providing this life-saving tool, we choose courage over comfort, stepping forward to fight preventable loss and protect the sacred gift of life.

Whether you are in a moment of crisis, looking out for a loved one, or simply seeking a safe place to land: You matter. You are worthy. You are loved. Centenary is here for you.

We want to highlight the partners who made this possible:

Megan Edens with Unicoi County Prevention Coalition, for their dedication to serving this community and ensuring that all have access to life saving care.

Brooke Bombailey and Scott Hispher with ACTION (Addiction Recovery Resource Center) for their support in the installation of the narcan box

A shout out to one of our partners in disaster recovery who were present to the installation of the narcan box:

IOCC (International Orthodox Christian Charities), their chaplains Kathy Hallas and Eleni Fredlund were present. These chaplains were here to serve the counties of Northeast TN that were affected by Hurricane Helene. They offer one-time emotional support and stress mitigation. They shared local resources for long term mental health care and any other needs that may arise.
