Our Old Testament readings have turned to the book of Job, which is believed to be one of the oldest books of the Bible, as well as one of the poetic books. Today's reading is Job 2:1-13, with verse 10 standing out. It is Job's response to his wife's questioning why Job would remain faithful to God in all the hardship he is enduring. Job responds:
“You speak as any foolish woman would speak. Shall we receive the good at the hand of God, and not receive the bad?”

Verse 10 begins with a reprimand of his wife, but it also indicates that we do not only receive good in our lives as faithful people, but we also receive hardships and difficulties.

No one is exempt from difficulty in this life. Like Job, we are called to remain faithful to God - no matter what, knowing that he walks with us in our journey. The faith that we have is what can help us move forward and come out of the valley.

Psalm 131
O Lord, I am not proud; *
I have no haughty looks.
I do not occupy myself with great matters, *
or with things that are too hard for me.
But I still my soul and make it quiet,
like a child upon its mother’s breast; *
my soul is quieted within me.
O Israel, wait upon the Lord, *
from this time forth for evermore.

Psalm 131 carries the theme of yesterday's reading, reminding us that we need to "still my soul and make it quiet." Rest is such an important part of the renewal process within each of us, and it also allows us to reconnect with our Lord.

Take time today to just BE, within the quiet, within the stillness; turning towards our Lord, seeking the renewal that we all need.

Our reading today is John 6:1-15. It is a familiar one of the fishes and loaves. In verse 15, we read:
When Jesus realized that they were about to come and take him by force to make him king, he withdrew again to the mountain by himself.

This verse could indicate that Jesus went to the mountain to try and avoid the crowd, but it also could show how Jesus finds time to rest and find renewal, as he is becoming overwhelmed by all that is happening to him as more people realize his importance and who he truly is - the Son of God.

Our lives can be overwhelming with all the things that are given to us to do, and it is important to find the time to step away and "withdraw to the mountains by ourselves." Like Jesus, we also need to find time to rest, to pray, to find renewal within ourselves.

Jesus said to them, “Very truly, I tell you, the Son can do nothing on his own, but only what he sees the Father doing; for whatever the Father does, the Son does likewise." ~John 5:19

In our world it is easy to see someone and idolize them or try to model their behavior. For Jesus, he knows that he needs to model his behavior after God. As children of God, we need to model our behavior after the teachings and ministry of Jesus. He gave us an amazing example of how to live a life of love, through caring for others and faithfully serving God.

How do you care for others to show the example of Jesus to others?

At times, the Old Testament can be difficult to read and determine the meaning from it. When reading the Old Testament, it is important to consider the history of the story, as well as the culture of the society and what is going on before and after the passage selected to give context to the reading.

Our Old Testament readings of been from the book of Judges, with today being Judges 14:20-15:20. The story of Samson has been the focus the past couple of days as he is battling back and forth with the Philistines. Today, Samson has battled the Philistines and is not exhausted in his victory and he cries out for help. Judges 15:18-19 says:
By then he was very thirsty, and he called on the Lord, saying, “You have granted this great victory by the hand of your servant. Am I now to die of thirst, and fall into the hands of the uncircumcised?” So God split open the hollow place that is at Lehi, and water came from it. When he drank, his spirit returned, and he revived.

Even amidst his victory, Samson knows that he can call upon the Lord. Today's reading is a reminder that when we are in need, God will provide - we just need to reach out to Him. There are times that what God provides may not always be what "we think we need," but God is faithful and good, and He is working all things through him, if we seek Him and trust Him.......just like Samson.

In John 4:27-42, the Samaritan woman returns home and shares her story with her people. In verse 42 the Samaritans say to her, “It is no longer because of what you said that we believe, for we have heard for ourselves, and we know that this is truly the Savior of the world.”

The Samaritan's in the woman's town were coming to learn about Jesus and who he is by listening to the woman's testimony. We, too, can come to learn about Jesus through someone else's testimony and believe in who He is. To maintain and strengthen that belief, we need to read Scripture about Jesus. Reading Scripture invites God into our home so that we can build a relationship with Him and learn more about Jesus's ministry and the power of the Holy Spirit.

Reading Scripture doesn't mean you have to read the Bible from start to finish - reading Scripture can be a small start, like choosing a book, a passage, a Psalm, or even just opening the Bible and reading a passage. However you chose to read Scripture, do so today and find out how powerful Scripture can be in your life.

Water is such a source of life - replenishing our bodies to function as they are meant to do so. When we are dehydrated, our bodies are negatively impacted.

Our reading from John 4:1-26 shares the story of Jesus at the well with the Samaritan woman. In verses 13-14, Jesus tells the woman:
“Everyone who drinks of this water will be thirsty again, but those who drink of the water that I will give them will never be thirsty. The water that I will give will become in them a spring of water gushing up to eternal life.”

Like our natural drinking water, Jesus is our source of life, replenishing our body and soul on a daily basis. When Jesus is our source of life, there is a positive change that changes us in this life and the one that is to come.

In our reading, Acts 5:27-42, the apostles are working to teach other about Jesus, but the authorities do not like it and are threatening and imprisoning those who even speak the name of Jesus. In verses 38-39, one of the leader says:
So in the present case, I tell you, keep away from these men and let them alone; because if this plan or this undertaking is of human origin, it will fail; but if it is of God, you will not be able to overthrow them—in that case you may even be found fighting against God!”

In our life, we can often get caught up with doing our own things and not following the will of God. When we fail, we often ask God why things didn't work out. Our reading reminds us that if it's human plans it will fail, but if it's God's plan, it will succeed.

For all things in life, may we lift up prayers to seek out God's plan and guidance.

Your love, O Lord, for ever will I sing; *
from age to age my mouth will proclaim your faithfulness.
For I am persuaded that your love is established for ever.
~Psalm 89:1-2a

Our Psalm today (Psalm 89 Part 1) starts off with joy filling the heart - Your love, O Lord, for ever will I sing.......

Life can lead to stress, anxiety, grief...you name it, but within that life, we can also find great joy. Psalms of praise case be a great opportunity for us to reflect that amidst the troubles in this life, God is good, and His goodness is worth celebrating!

Verse 31 from our reading in Acts today (Acts:13-31) shares what happens after Peter and John prayed in their situation:
When they had prayed, the place in which they were gathered together was shaken; and they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and spoke the word of God with boldness.

Prayer can fill us with the Spirit to remind us who we are and who we belong to - God. Prayer can give us that strength we need to power through a difficult situation. No matter what is occurring, take a moment and pray, it makes all the difference.
