In last week's Gospel, Peter was granted the status of first Apostle and leader of the Church. Why the change? It seems that, even after all this time, he is still thinking too small. Jesus rebukes him and encourages him to lift his eyes and mind up and outward to the surprising way in which the Lord is going to save humanity.

This is Fr. Morelli's role here at Holy Rosary - to get us to see God's plan, as big and "impractical" as it may be! That's how God works.

Today, the Church commemorates John's death at the hands of King Herod. John's death foreshadows Jesus' death in some key ways. He is killed by a ruler who hesitates in executing him (Herod = Pilate), he is killed for speaking the hard truths to the people, and his disciples take his body away afterward. Whether John knew all the details or not, he had faith that he had spoken the truth to power. Saint John the Baptist, grant us at Holy Rosary your courage today.
