On this Memorial Day, we give thanks for those who gave their lives in service to others. As people of faith, we remember the words of Jesus: “Greater love has no one than this: to lay down one’s life for one’s friends.”

May we honor their sacrifice not only with remembrance, but by living as peacemakers, pursuing justice, loving our neighbors, and working for the healing of the world God so loves.

Memorial Day Prayer
Heavenly Father, thank You for the precious gift of freedom, the freedom to worship, to speak, and to live according to our conscience.
On this Memorial Day, we remember with deep gratitude the brave men and women who gave their lives so that we might enjoy these liberties. Their sacrifice reflects the love of Christ, Who laid down His life so that we might be eternally free. Help us use our freedom wisely, to serve others, seek justice, and reflect Your light in a world longing for peace. Comfort the families who have lost loved ones in service. Assure them that their sacrifice was not in vain and is remembered by a grateful nation.
May we live each day with thankfulness and courage, honoring both their memory and Your grace. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.

Aldersgate Day, celebrated on May 24 (or the Sunday closest), commemorates the day in 1738 when John Wesley experienced assurance of his salvation, or, as like to say, John Wesley felt his "heart strangely warmed."

The story goes that Wesley reluctantly attended a group meeting that evening on Aldersgate Street in London. Wesley wrote in his journal that at about 8:45 p.m. he was listening to a reading from Luther's Preface to the Epistle to the Romans.

"While he was describing the change which God works in the heart through faith in Christ, I felt my heart strangely warmed. I felt I did trust in Christ, Christ alone for salvation; and an assurance was given me that He had taken away my sins, even mine, and saved me from the law of sin and death."

As we celebrate Aldersgate Day -- and Pentecost -- we remember the power of the Holy Spirit that ignited a movement called Methodism -- and continues to ignite us into faithful and loving actions today!
