In January 1948, with war looming and a state about to be born, Golda Meir flew to America to raise $25 million for the weapons Israel would need to survive. She came home with $50 million — double her goal.
Ben-Gurion would later say of her: “One day it will be told how one small woman saved the Jewish state.”
