Blessed Feast Day!

The Feast of the Dormition of the Theotokos is the commemoration of the falling asleep, burial, resurrection, and translation of the Theotokos into heaven in the body.

The word "Dormition" is a derivative from the Latin word "dormitio", which means "falling asleep."

According to the Orthodox Tradition, the Virgin Mary lived after Pentecost in the house of the Apostle John in Jerusalem. As the Mother of the Lord, she became the source of encouragement and help for the Apostles and all Christians.
Three days before her death, the Archangel Gabriel appeared to the Virgin Mary and revealed to her the date of her departure into eternal life. Immediately, the Theotokos returned to her home and prepared herself for this event through fasting and prayer.

On the day of her repose, even though the apostles were scattered throughout the world, they were miraculously transported to be at her side. Exceptionally, the Apostle Thomas did not arrive on time to bid his final farewell to the Theotokos.

While the Apostles were singing hymns in honor of the Mother of God, they saw a vision showing Christ, accompanied by Angels and Saints, coming to es**rt the soul of His Most Holy Mother into heaven. With songs of praises, the Apostles carried the body of the most pure Theotokos to the grave in Gethsemane to be buried near her parents.

At Gethsemane, the disciples gathered and remained around her tomb and kept a vigil for three days. On the Third day, the Apostle Thomas arrived and asked to view for the last time the Most Holy Mother of God. When the Apostles opened the grave of the Theotokos, her body was not there. The Apostles realized then that she was taken into heaven in the body to be reunited with her soul.

Message from Metropolitan Ambrose:

Happy Feast of the Transfiguration, dear friends!

Shortly before His Passion, the Lord took Peter, James, and John and led them up a high mountain. "And He was transfigured before them, and His face shone like the sun, and His garments became white as light" (Matthew 17:2). The disciples saw what was always in their Teacher, but hidden beneath the veil of the ordinary: the light of the divine. Filled with emotion, Peter spoke the words that every person who has experienced a moment of true happiness repeats: "Lord, it is good for us to be here" (Matthew 17:4). Let us build three dwellings and stay here. Let this never end.

But no one remained on the mountain. Christ led the disciples down, because ahead lay Jerusalem, Gethsemane, and Golgotha. The Church speaks of the meaning of this light in the kontakion of the feast: "The Lord revealed His glory beforehand, so that, seeing Him crucified, the disciples would understand that His suffering was voluntary." The light of the Transfiguration is not given for us to admire. It is given to help us hold on when everything around us becomes very dark.

The Lord gives each of us our own moments of Tabor. In church, when our hearts suddenly thaw. Over the Gospels, when a line becomes a living, real thread of life. Near loved ones, in the silence that we learn during this Dormition Fast. These moments cannot be held, no matter how much we want to build dwellings in them. They must be remembered, so that later we can turn to them, "as to a lamp shining in a dark place" (2 Peter 1:19), on days when everything is dark and God seems silent. We will remember that we have seen the light, and we will move forward.

"May Your eternal light shine upon us, sinners," the Church sings today. May it shine. And may it not be extinguished in us when we descend from the mountain.
