This is my response to all the criticism being leveled at homeschool enrichment centers in NY. Sadly some of the critics are folks tasked with protecting our right to homeschool in NY.
I am genuinely thankful that here in New York, parents still retain meaningful rights when it comes to directing their children’s education. As long as the majority of homeschooling is done at home—even if a family hires a private tutor—parents are fully permitted to have their children participate in group tutoring and homeschool enrichment programs. Long Island is blessed with many wonderful centers led by dedicated directors, and many of them are truly affordable and accessible for families. In a state where so much of life is heavily regulated, I’m grateful that we still have the freedom to choose what is best for our children. Some of the criticism aimed at enrichment centers often comes from misunderstanding, especially from moms who homeschool exclusively at home. I understand that perspective deeply—I was a purist myself for nearly 20 years. But over the last six years of running PEL Prep Ministries - A Classical Christian Scholé Community, I have seen firsthand how life‑giving this model can be. I’ve had the privilege of supporting so many moms and employing some of the most beautiful, godly women and men—people who are truly excellent at what they do—to come alongside families a couple of days a week. This work has been a blessing. It has strengthened families, encouraged mothers, and created a community where children can flourish academically, spiritually, and socially. I’m grateful every day for the opportunity to serve in this way.
