Pastor's Monday Meditations: The Watch of the Lord – in 2 Chronicles 23:6, instructions were given by Jehoida the priest to Judah regarding the coronation of Joash to be king. Athaliah had usurped the throne and Jehoida felt his call to restore the rightful king. In doing so, he orchestrated a well-organized plan to guard the king from the wicked queen. His instructions to the people were to “keep the watch,” that is, guard the temple and courtyard. How often do we need to “keep a watch” as well from our enemies the world, the flesh and the devil. How many times does flesh rear its ugly head and want to say or do something that would not be right. Let’s take the admonition from Ps 141:3 “Set a watch, O Lord, before my mouth; keep the door of my lips.” Make sure that our flesh, and particularly our tongue is well guarded!

Pastor's Monday Meditations: In the Process of Time – This statement was made regarding King Jehoram in regard to God’s judgment on his wicked lifestyle (2 Chron. 21:19). Because he had turned away from God and led Judah to worship idols, God punished him with an incurable bowel disease. The description in the Bible is vivid (“his bowels fell out”). Sin is ugly and the consequences are uglier! But it’s interesting to note that God did not strike him down instantly, but gave him two years with the disease before he died. Why? I think God was giving him a chance to repent. Time is important to God – perhaps time to repent, or for those living a godly lifestyle in times of trials, time for your faith to grow (Psalm 27: 14 “wait on the Lord”). Whether repentance or growth, let’s remember God always works in His timing, “in the process of time.”

Monday Meditations: A Light to Us – Happy Memorial Day (on Tuesday or Wednesday!) – When I think of how the promise to David’s descendants is related in 2 Chron. 21:7, I am reminded of the Divine blessing given to America. Judah had a wicked king in Jehoram, but the Scriptures make the statement that the Lord would not destroy him or his dynasty because of the Davidic covenant, that a descendant of David would forever reign on the throne. It expresses it this way: “he promised to give a light to him and to his sons forever.” Israel had the light of God’s promise. We too have the light of God’s promise of salvation given to us. Likewise, we also have a light in America with an abundance of Bibles, preachers and churches – all because of the freedoms we hold dear. Let’s thank God for the light that shines in our country bringing the knowledge of the truth of the gospel!
