Second Baptist Church, Dowagiac

Second Baptist Church, Dowagiac God fearing, loving, and teaching church located in SouthWest Michigan. Early in the 1800s there was only one Baptist Church in Dowagiac. and Mrs. Charlie Farrow.

It was located on the corner of Center and Courtland Streets. Both Blacks and Whites worshipped together. Blacks, feeling a need to have their own church left to organize one of their own. The Second Baptist Church was recorded as having been organized in the home of Mr. Services were first held in a room over the fire station then located on East Division Street, then in a building on Pennsylvani

a Ave. across from where the “old” Second Baptist Church stood. “Old” Second Baptist was purchased from the Salvation Army in 1897. The present edifice is located at 203 S. Paul Street. We have a very rich heritage at Second Baptist Church. We are one of the oldest black churches in Southwest Michigan. We give thanks to all those Christian soldiers who went on before us to make Second Baptist possible. God truly has blessed and continues to bless this church. To God be the glory!
