Have you joined a St. Francis of Assisi book group yet? During this Year of St. Francis, book groups are forming to read a book about our patron saint, meet to discuss it, and get to know both the Poor Man of Assisi and our fellow parishioners better.

Sign up at the Year of St. Francis table in the Gathering Space to read, learn, share, and embrace one another as a parish community. Groups are still forming, so it’s not too late to join.

Before May gets too far behind us, please take note of the new redbud tree planted on the hill, as one walks down to the Parish Center entrance. Board members of Upcounty Community Resources (UCR) dedicated the tree on May 21 before their meeting in honor of former St. Francis parishioner and UCR board member Meghan Jones, who passed away January 8, 2025.

Gone from this earth, but living very much in memory and as part of God’s creation!

Did you ever wonder who’s responsible for raising and lowering the flag at the Rectory? It’s the service of John DeMare, longtime parishioner, past Grand Knight of Knights of Columbus Montgomery Council 2323, and usher. John undertook the duty approximately two years ago when he asked the parish staff if he could fly his father’s flag on the Rectory flagpole. The act felt right to honor his father, who was both a service member in the U.S. Army and a Catholic deacon. His father’s flag has since been retired, but John continues the duty today.

Thank you, John!

In this season of graduations, the St. Francis of Assisi Youth Ministry honored 11 seniors, who are parishioners, graduating from area high schools last Sunday, May 17, at our annual Baccalaureate Mass in the church. The high school seniors participated in the liturgical roles of the Mass at 11:15 am, were acknowledged with a gift, and received a blessing from Fr. John in the church. Afterward, the parish congregation was invited to eat cake at a reception in the Gathering Space.

Congratulations to all our 2026 graduates! May God bless you always, as you take the next step on your paths.

As you come to Mass this weekend, please take a moment to appreciate the painted canvas marking our Year of St. Francis table in the Gathering Space. It was designed by, painted, and donated by parishioner Mary Jordan, a member of the virtual Rosary group and a longtime lector.

Thank you, Mary, for sharing your artistic gifts with the parish, in ensuring that pilgrims can help commemorate this Year of St. Francis. Let’s ask ourselves, how we, too, can help contribute to our Body of Christ at St. Francis!
