Running Tips

Looking unto Jesus, the author and finisher of our faith; who for the joy that was set before Him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is set down at the right hand of the throne of God.
Hebrews 12:2

Outside Magazine ran an article on the best running tips of all time, based on forty years of articles. Among the suggestions: (1) Strengthen your whole body; don't just focus on your legs. (2) Run more hills; it's good for your hips. (3) Find a routine, then stick to it—maybe even down to wearing the same clothing. (4) Take recovery days seriously.
(Recommended Reading: 2 Timothy 4: 6 - 8)

All those suggestions are true spiritually. In running the race, we need to train ourselves-body, soul, and spirit. Don't be afraid of the hill ahead. Establish your spiritual routines and stick with them. And learn to rest and recover in Jesus.

Our walk with God is like a race; we must be prepared to run and be aware of any challenges that may interfere with our success. A race that is run well has great rewards. We will see Christ one day, so don't despair about today.

Look with faith toward the finish line. Remember, God has our future in His secure hands.

My Wonderful Lord
Haldor Lillenas

This beautiful hymn was published in 1958 by Haldor Lillenas. He was a prolific hymn writer, composing and publishing over 4,000 hymns. Although you may know many of the hymns he wrote, you may not know that after his retirement, he and his wife toured Israel. He met and sponsored a Palestinian Greek Orthodox family whom he had met as immigrants to the United States.

After arriving in Pasadena, the family stayed with Lillenas for several months. After this, Haldor rented and furnished a home for them to stay in. The husband eventually abandoned his wife and two sons and returned to Jordan. Lillenas ensured that they were able to remain in the U.S. Her son, Sirhan B. Sirhan, was the convicted killer of Robert Kennedy.

Lillenas wrote hymns and songs that expressed his faith and joy. Many struggled with a phrase in the chorus, "I bow at Thy shrine, my Savior divine." What shrine? And why would we bow at a shrine? Christ is not dead. His tomb is empty! He is now seated on the throne at the right hand of the Father in Heaven. Robert Catrill suggested changing this line to "I know Thou art mine!"

I have found a deep peace that I never had known
And a joy this world could not afford,
Since I yielded control of my body and soul
To my wonderful, wonderful Lord.

Chorus:

My wonderful Lord, my wonderful Lord
By angels and seraphs
In Heaven adored
I know Thou art mine!
My Savior divine
My wonderful, wonderful Lord

Can you claim these words as your testimony? Yielding your all to the Lord? What about the deep peace that results from this dedication? He is deserving of all our praise...

“Faithful Service”
Ezekiel 47:13

Joseph is one of the few people in Scripture of whom no evil is recorded. Through the good and the bad, he remained faithful to God, and the Lord richly rewarded his faithfulness. By the time Ezekiel wrote his prophecy, Joseph had been dead for more than a millennium, yet God still declared, “Joseph shall have two portions” (Ezekiel 47:13). Even after all that time, God had not forgotten Joseph’s faithful service.

What an encouragement for us today! Joseph’s life reminds us that no act of service to God is ever overlooked. The Lord hears every prayer, He sees every sacrifice and act of obedience, and He remembers them all.

Joseph’s faithfulness brought blessing not only to himself, but also to his family, his children, and even an entire nation during a time of famine. In the same way, God can use us to accomplish far more than we may ever realize.

What will God use your faithful service to accomplish? Compared to eternity, our lives are but a v***r. Yet what we do for God in this short life can have an everlasting impact. God honors those who honor Him. He never forgot Joseph, and He will not forget you! Continue serving Him faithfully, knowing that your labor in the Lord is never in vain.

The Mark Helzerman Family
Papua New Guinea
Prayer Letter
May, 2026

Edited for space:
These last 4 months have passed with not much change in our visa situation. Currently, my Passport with the visa is in hand. On the other "hand", the Passports for Christi, Serenity and Glory have been at the PNG Embassy in Washington DC for over a month now. It was recommended to us not to buy any tickets for the flight to PNG until all this is sorted out and completed by the PNG Government. Even so, my visa will be terminated if I do not "enter PNG within six months from the date of issue....Failure to do so will render my visa invalid." That means I will need to enter with or without my "dependents" before the 4th of September.

On a more joyful note, our daughter Hadassah was happily wed to Silas Champlin on March 28, 2026. Since the wedding, this newly married couple have been traveling to different places in the USA presenting the work in Suriname, South America. We rejoice with them that several churches have committed to financially support their work. Many other individuals have committed to pray for them. Please pray for courage for all that may come their way in this new field of service.

The newest news concerning our family is another upcoming wedding in the later part of September for our daughter Grace. Last year a young man from Fairbanks, Alaska came "calling" for her. Kyle Gray is a fine young man with intentions to continue serving the Lord at his home church as he works a full time job.

"Come Apart, Don't Fall Apart"

"And he said unto them, Come ye yourselves apart into a desert place, and rest a while: for there were many coming and going, and they had no leisure so much as to eat."
(Mark 6:31)

The disciples were overwhelmed in the work of ministering to others so Jesus took them apart to rest and to eat. This verse has been often used to justify a needed vacation. There is a need to occasionally step away from our work so we can be refreshed with our wife and children and do a better work. But what many do on vacation is anything but what Jesus had in mind. There is a danger in vacations.

Many get away from their church duties and never come back. Many often spend too much money and never seem to recover. Because routines are changed dramatically, many miss their daily devotions. Very often on vacation, a good church cannot be found, so real worship is compromised. Many vacation spots are sensual and worldly. Most of the time lost relatives are a real discouragement. So the vacationers come back more tired than when they left, broke and spiritually backslidden.

What can you do? A double effort must be made to keep up your relationship with God. Check ahead to find a good Bible believing church to attend. Maybe include a trip to the Creation Museum or the Ark Encounter in Kentucky. Maybe you could include the Sight and Sound theater in Pennsylvania or Missouri. Use your imagination. There is nothing wrong with a vacation, but don't forget your worship and devotions while you are there.
This is from my heart...
