Battling the Current

But without faith it is impossible to please Him: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him. Hebrews 11:6

Think of wading in a gentle creek or a fast-moving stream against the current. Or consider paddling a canoe up a small river with rapids or a raging river swollen by flood waters. Moving against the current is challenging. That's what it's like to live in an ungodly culture; you're always moving against the stream.
(Recommended Reading: 1 Timothy 4:7-8)

What does godly mean? That word in the New Testament means "pious; reverencing God," like the familiar "fear of the Lord." It's safe to say that by those definitions, there are few godly cultures today in which most or all of the people honor and revere God. Is it worth it to battle against the current of ungodliness? Paul wrote that "godliness is profitable unto all things, having promise of the life that now is, and of that which is to come. (1 Timothy 4:8) Hebrews 11:6 says that God is a "rewarder of them that diligently seek Him." Living against the cultural current takes diligence and commitment, but the reward is worth the effort.

Are you being swept along by the cultural current today? Take a stand and commit to living a godly life.

What A Day That Will Be
Jim Hill

A young orphan girl sang at Jim Hill's church, which planted the seed for this hymn story. She concluded her song with the words, "What a day that will be," a phrase that stayed with him over the years. The immediate spark came when Hill's mother-in-law suffered a debilitating stroke at the age of 50, leaving her paralyzed. As a new Christian, Hill struggled to comprehend why such a terrible thing would happen to such a kind and devout woman.

The words to the hymn, penned in 1933, began to flow into his mind. Unsure of its quality, he decided to share it with his family. They rehearsed it all the way to his mother-in-law's home. When they arrived, they sang it, and for the first time in three years, she smiled and showed signs of joy and excitement. This was confirmation to Jim that his song was blessed. It has since become an anthem of encouragement and hope for countless people. "And God shall wipe away all tears... no more death... sorrow...crving..." (Revelation 21:4)

There is coming a day, When no heartaches shall come
No more clouds in the sky, No more tears to dim the eye
All is peace forevermore, On that happy golden shore
What a day, glorious day that will be

Chorus

What a day that will be, When my Jesus I shall see
When I look upon His face, The One who saved me by His grace
When He takes me by the hand; and leads me through the Promised Land
What a day, glorious day that will be

“God is always working behind the scenes.”

I Samuel 20:35-39

As Saul hunted David to take his life, one of David’s biggest supporters was Jonathan, Saul’s son. In chapter 20 of I Samuel, we see what is probably the last interaction of David and Jonathan. Jonathan warns David of Saul’s plans by shooting arrows in a certain place while David hides in the field. In order to accomplish this, the Bible tells us in verse 35 that Jonathan uses a “little lad”.

This little lad has no idea of Jonathan’s plan, he does not know that David is hiding in the field waiting.. all he knows is that his master, Jonathan, told him to fetch the arrows, and that is what he does. Through his obedience he unknowingly plays a big part in saving David’s life. He didn’t know all that went into it, but his master had a plan, and by him doing his part he had a role in something bigger than he ever knew.

We see here a beautiful picture of us and our Master, the Lord Jesus Christ. We are the “little lad”. Our Master has a plan for us and although we don’t always know all the details, if we will just be faithful and play our part we will be amazed at what God is working out behind the scenes. Although at times it may be difficult, we must remain happy and content to be by the Master’s side and do our part in whatever task we are needed in, big or small.

RUDY STEMBRIDGE FAMILY
Word for the World Baptist Ministries
May / June 2026

Yesterday at Church, we were blessed to have a man and his wife baptized together. Both had previously trusted the Lord at different times, but wanted to follow the Lord in the next step in their Christian life together. Just last week, their teenage son trusted Christ as his Saviour! Praise the Lord! The Gospel still works!

Thank you for your faithful prayers and financial support that allow Cyndie and I to serve here in the Home Office of Word for the World Baptist Ministries. Missionary Candidate School is a little over a month away and plans are in full preparation. This will be our 46th Missionary Candidate School and will be held at the Calvary Ind. Baptist Church in Chattanooga. If you have never attended one of our Missionary Candidate Schools, make this the year you come. I know you will receive great preaching, teaching, and fellowship, with some good food to go with it! We have 8 of our veteran missionary families coming, so this will be a good school this year. We have 2 applicants and several visitors coming for the instruction and to seek the Lord's will concerning missions and the mission field. Please pray for the Missionary Candidate School this year that God will minister to every one in attendance and that His will be accomplished.

"Two Flags"

"Thou hast given a banner to them that fear thee, that it may be displayed because of the truth. Selah." Psalm 60:4

"And Moses built an altar, and called the name of it Jehovah-nissi:" (The LORD our Banner.) (Exodus 17:15)

Many are not aware of the symbolism of the American Flag. It is deeply connected to Divine Providence. The colors—-red, white and blue, have been standard since 1777. The stars indicate the 13 original states as a new constellation in heaven; representing a new nation. The field of blue represents heaven. The red represents the blood and courage; while the white represents purity. The number of stars on the flag have changed by the addition of states. It now has 50 stars with the addition of Alaska and Hawaii in 1959. Displaying the American flag became widespread after the War of 1812 battle at Fort McHenry, which also spawned the writing of the "Star Spangled Banner:" As a side note, the US government was considering designs for the 50 state American Flag in 1958. A Michigan-born seventeen year old high school student, Robert Heft, personally designed and sewed the flag as a high school project and received a B- as his grade. It was submitted and congress approved his design.

The Christian flag was conceived after a no-show speaker for a Sunday School Convention in a Coney Island chapel in 1897. Charles Overton did an impromptu speech on the colors of the American flag and how every army should have its flag. It was those words that caused him to work with another Methodist gentleman to come up with a flag for Christians. It has a red cross signifying the blood of Jesus; the color blue, representing heaven on a field of white signifying the cleansing and purity of the saint before God's eyes. It is uniquely a free flag. It is not owned by any denomination like many other flags. We should honor, respect and serve our flags and what they represent.

This is from my heart...
