As we observe Labor Day, we give thanks for the dignity of work and for all whose labor serves our families, communities and neighbors.

May God bless the work of our hands and grant rest and renewal to all who labor.

Ahead of the 500th anniversary of the Guadalupan event in 2031, bishops from Mexico, the United States, and Canada gathered in Mexico City for a fraternal meeting and prayer at the Shrine of Our Lady of Guadalupe. Bishop Daniel E. Flores of Brownsville and Vice President of the USCCB, Bishop Oscar Cantú of San José, Bishop Eugenio Lira Rugarcía of Matamoros, and Bishop Pierre Goudreault of Sainte-Anne-de-la-Pocatière and President of the Canadian Conference of Catholic Bishops, were among those present.

The bishops carried home tilmas as part of the Novena Guadalupana Intercontinental, a preparation across the Americas leading to 2031. Each diocese will receive a tilma, a third-class relic, for enthronement in its cathedral, followed by two years of missionary activity and catechesis as the image travels to parishes beginning in 2027.

We are grateful to former rector, Fr. Michael Kesicki, for leading our opening retreat at Jesuit Retreat Center in Parma, OH. Fr. Michael offered reflections on Pope Francis’ encyclical, Dilexit Nos, on the human and divine love of the Sacred Heart of Jesus.

This year, we give thanks for 28 faithful servants — priests, permanent deacons and women religious — whose lives and ministries have been a blessing to the Diocese of Erie and the people they have served.

Their stories span generations and communities, from classrooms and parishes to hospitals, outreach ministries and countless moments of quiet service.

Beginning this Wednesday and continuing each Wednesday through the end of the year, we invite you to join us in celebrating these remarkable men and women, giving thanks for their faithful witness and praying for them and all those who continue to answer Christ’s call.
