“To Obey is Better Than Sacrifice”

OTD in 1651, Baptist preacher Obadiah Holmes was publicly given 30 lashes in Boston for preaching and worshiping outside the established church.

Holmes had been arrested while visiting fellow Baptists in Massachusetts and refused to pay the fine imposed upon him, believing that doing so would acknowledge the government’s authority over his religious convictions.

After enduring the brutal whipping, Holmes reportedly told the magistrates, “You have struck me as with roses.”

His suffering became an important episode in the long Baptist struggle for religious liberty in America, a liberty Baptists would continue fighting for more than a century later.

“Self,” the greatest enemy a Christian has.

Self-love, self-pride, self-promotion, self-seeking, self-serving, self-pity, self-doubt.

May God help “self” to be put in its only proper place—denial!

Luke 9:23, “And he said to them all, If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily, and follow me.”

OTD in 1873, 32-year-old Lottie Moon left the United States for China, just weeks after being appointed as a missionary by . After more than a month at sea, she arrived in China and began a missionary ministry that would last nearly 40 years.

Moon became one of the most influential missionaries in Southern Baptist history, advocating not only for reaching China with the gospel, but also for more missionaries and greater support from Baptists back home.

“If I had a thousand lives to give, I would give them all for China.”
