We officially welcome Deacon Blaine Phillips to St. Mary's as he begins his ministry as transitional deacon of our church. Dcn. Phillips will preside over today's 5:15 p.m. Communion Service. We pray, through the intercession of Our Lady of the Assumption, for God's blessing upon him and his vocation.

Our church extends its heartfelt congratulations to our seminarian Graham Descant who (on Thursday) received his undergraduate degree in Philosophy from Notre Dame Seminary in New Orleans. This represents a significant milestone for Graham on his path to the priesthood - may God bless him and his vocation!

St. Mary's celebrated Confirmation last night with the Most Rev. Robert W. Marshall, Jr., Bishop of Alexandria, along with other clergy: Fr. Charlie Ray, Fr. Blake Deshautelle, and Dcn. Richard Mitchell. In addition to the 19 Confirmandi from our church, 3 Confirmandi from the Mansura churches (St. Paul the Apostle and Our Lady of Prompt Succor) all received the Holy Sacrament. Guided by the seven gifts of the Holy Spirit, we wish these young men and women well in their journey of faith.

We congratulate the 23 boys and girls who received First Holy Communion last Sunday. These youth are from our school or are part of the church's Youth Faith Formation program. May they experience deeper union with Jesus Christ and grow in their love and devotion for the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass.

At this morning's school Mass, Blessed Mother Mary, patroness of our church and school, was crowned Queen of Heaven and Earth and the Mother of God - Salve Regina!

The Children's Christmas Play will be held at 5:15 p.m. on Christmas Eve just prior to the Christmas Vigil Mass at 5:30 p.m. Practice will be held after 9:30 a.m. Mass on Sunday, Dec. 21. On Saturday, November 8, St. Mary's Vocations Ministry hosted its annual Vocations Awareness Week event. Religious groups represented included: sisters from the Community of Jesus Crucified, the Mercedarian Sisters of Baton Rouge, the Alliance of the Holy Family International, and diocesan priests and seminarians. Youth from across the area took part in the day's events which focused on discernment, prayer, and learning about seminary and religious life. The day concluded with a Holy Hour in the presence of the Blessed Sacrament followed by Holy Mass. The Church commends its Vocations Ministry as well as volunteers who assisted for their tireless efforts in ensuring the event's success - may God bless all involved in particular those discerning God's call to serve His Church.

Join us this Sunday, October 5, for 9:30 a.m. Mass as we celebrate the heritage of St. Anthony's Catholic Church which served the African-American community of Cottonport from the late 1940s through the early 1980s. We welcome to our community of faith, all of its parishioners displaced by its closure. A meal will be served in the CYO following the Mass.

Most Rev. Robert W. Marshall, Jr., Bishop of Alexandria, celebrated School Mass with St. Mary's School students last Friday, the Solemnity of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, patroness of our church and school. We thank the Bishop for being with us on our Parish Feast Day!
