In 1 Chronicles 29, King David prays that the generation coming after him will be dedicated to the Lord and to the mission God has given. When he finished praying, the people with him gave thanks to God, celebrated, and got to work.

In the same way, God has given us a mission. We spend time in prayer (the most important work!) and then we must get up, go out, and live our lives with our mission in mind. Our prayer is both vertical (to God) and horizontal (for people).

What would it look like for prayer to be the foundation of your life’s work?

The goal of prayer is not merely to get things from God, but to experience His presence. In prayer, we pause, humble ourselves, and respond to the greatness of the One who created the universe, yet is our loving Father, close Friend, and ever-present Help in time of trouble.

The more time we spend in prayer, the more we realize that no amount of time will ever be enough to deplete us of the wonder of our God!

In the book of 2 Kings, we read that King Hezekiah was one of the few righteous kings of Israel, and yet he found himself surrounded by 200,000 Assyrian troops — the most powerful military force in the ancient world. Hezekiah’s response was prayer.

But before he prayed, he had to realize something: his preparations, alliances, and fortifications were not enough on their own. He had relied on his own strength before turning to God. When he finally surrendered, he laid the enemy’s letter directly before the Lord in the temple — not before his generals or diplomats.

Hezekiah’s prayer moves through the 4/4 pattern: reverence in worship, response in surrender, request in bold dependence, and readiness in trusting God to act.

Trust in God is not merely wishful thinking, but an unshakable, reality-building faith that He can be relied on. The original ancient Hebrew word, “Batah” describes putting one’s full weight on something and knowing it will hold. In God, we are secure, and we can rest in the knowledge of His power and love.

Don’t let a rigid definition of “prayer” keep you from praying!

We often think that a “good” prayer session involves hours of uninterrupted time, kneeling or journaling in silence. But this isn’t always doable in our daily lives, and so we often avoid the practice of prayer altogether.

The problem is, our definition of prayer is often too rigid. Times of dedicated, reverent, quiet prayer are wonderful, but so also are the brief moments of turning to God at work, while caring for our families, shopping for groceries, and doing all He’s given us to do.

These snippets of prayer are not any less holy, important, or acceptable to God. In fact, He welcomes us to walk with Him in prayer in every moment.

How can you incorporate prayer into your daily life?
