Church Life & Worship
Our current Sunday morning worship begins at Springfield Baptist at 8:45 a.m. with Sunday School classes held for children, youth, adult women and adult men’s groups. Sunday School teaching materials, topics, and book studies are chosen by the teacher and approved by the Pastor / Christian Education Committee. Worship service begins at 10:00 a.m. Average Sunday worship attendance is 45 to 50 individuals. Hymns are sung by congregation from a hymnal and a contemporary worship chorus with piano and organ accompaniment in a traditional style. After welcome and announcements, praises and prayer requests are shared by attendees, followed by prayer and the Lord’s Prayer. The choir sings weekly along with special music on occasion. After the offering is Scripture reading / sermon, then closing hymn and benediction. Biblical truth and scripture are the basis of all sermons at Springfield Baptist. The Ordinance of Communion is usually observed on the first Sunday of each month, led by the pastor and served by two deacons. Baptisms are celebrated periodically using baptismal facilities at other churches or venues. Youth group is held Sunday evenings, 6:00 p.m.- 7:30 p.m. throughout the school year with a break during the summer months. All youth, church attendees and non-attendees, grades 7 - 12, are welcome to attend. Two lay leaders and pastor lead youth-based teaching followed by refreshments and game time. Bible Study and Prayer meeting is held at 7:30 p.m. The pastor-led study of a biblical topic or book of the Bible with group interaction is designed to increase biblical knowledge and personal study of the participants. A list of on-going prayer needs is distributed and new praises and requests are voiced followed by a time of prayer. Special Services
The Easter celebration begins with a Maundy Thursday communion service at 7:00 p.m. on the Thursday before Easter Sunday. Easter Sunrise Service begins at 7:00 a.m. A church breakfast is then held at 7:30 a.m. followed by regular Sunday School and Worship services. A Christmas Eve Candlelight service is held at 7:00 p.m. on December 24th. This is a wonderful time for church attendees to worship together, share a music/song, talent or a Christmas reading and sing Christmas carols while celebrating the birth of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. Candles are lit as the service is ended by singing “Silent Night.”
One Sunday afternoon in December, members gather at the church, then split into two groups to travel to the homes of area shut-ins and elderly to sing Christmas carols and distribute jars of homemade soup created by the SBC youth group. Once a year, in the fall, SBC enjoys a “Sermon at Mt. Pisgah.” Sunday worship service is held outside at Mt. Pisgah County Park at 10:30 a.m. overlooking the majestic scenery of Bradford County. Worship songs are sung a ca****la and a regular service schedule follows. Afterward, a church fellowship dinner is enjoyed under the pavilion with everyone bringing a dish to pass. Music is an important part of ministry and worship. SBC has been described by many as a “singing” church with many talented musicians! The Choir presents seasonal cantatas during regular Sunday morning worship service and our Chime Choir performs occasionally. Hymn Sings are held a couple times a year on a Sunday evening at 6:00 p.m. with members encouraged to invite others outside our church - refreshments and fellowship follow the hymn sing. VBS is an important community outreach to the families of our area and to plant the seeds of the Gospel in the hearts of the children. Typically, it is held in August from Sunday through Thursday evening, 6:00 - 8:30 p.m., at Springfield Baptist. All children ages 4 - 6th Grade are welcome to attend. Usual attendance is between 20-30 children per night. Our baby bottle campaign is held from January through mid-March with all members encouraged to fill a baby bottle with donated coins for the Endless Mountain Pregnancy Crisis Center. EMPCC is a Bradford County based ministry that helps inform and educate pregnant women, provides free ultrasounds, clothing, car seats, and pack n plays to moms and babies through the Center’s “Earn While You Learn” parenting classes. A baby shower is held yearly and all gifts brought are donated to EMPCC. Springfield Baptist Church participates in Samaritan’s Purse “Operation Christmas Child” and collects items for shoeboxes starting in October and ends mid-November. On a Sunday after church, all are invited to a Shoebox Packing Party. All collected items are then sorted and put into appropriate age- group shoeboxes. Last year, SBC packed 52 boxes that went to Ukraine! The women of SBC hold a weekend retreat each fall with Bible study lessons, singing, fellowship, food and a service project. The deacons of SBC host a men’s breakfast with personal testimony, as well as a men’s summer cookout for fun and fellowship. Both men and women of SBC do special projects for SBC and community members when needed.
