🚨Important message from our Executive Director of ATP Task Force, Katie Yaryan.

The latest ruling about AI generated CSAM is deeply concerning.

Technology has changed dramatically, but our laws have not kept pace.

A federal appeals court has ruled that existing Supreme Court precedent protects the private possession of certain AI-generated child sexual abuse material when no real child can be shown to have been involved in its creation. Even the judges acknowledged the troubling reality: today’s AI-generated images can be virtually indistinguishable from images depicting the actual sexual abuse of children.

This is not a harmless loophole. AI-generated child sexual abuse material creates new challenges for investigators, makes identifying real victims more difficult, and risks normalizing imagery that should never be acceptable in any form.

Protecting children requires our laws to evolve as quickly as the technology being used to exploit them.

We cannot afford to look the other way.

At our latest Guardian Retreat, ICAC Commander David Frattare explains how technology, social platforms, the sharing of child sexual abuse material, and the evolving behavior of offenders continue to make these investigations more complex. Behind every screen, every file, and every investigation is a child who deserves protection.

Looking back on my childhood, I often think about what a Lion & Lamb trauma tool would have meant to me during some of the darkest moments of my life.

They spend their days looking for children who have been exploited, pursuing the people who hurt them, and carrying stories most of us will never have to see.

But who takes care of the people doing the work?

David Frattare has spent 29 years in law enforcement, including 22 years working cases involving the exploitation of children. He knows firsthand that if we don’t care for those on the front lines, we can’t expect them to keep carrying this work well.

The Guardian Retreat gives these investigators, analysts, and prosecutors a place to breathe, recover, reconnect, and remember that they don’t have to carry it alone.
