“God sees my heart. He doesn’t care about the length of my hair, whether I have a tattoo, or whether I drink alcohol. Stop being so legalistic!” What a stupid and foolish argument, because it creates a false choice between the condition of a man’s heart and obedience to God’s Word. The Bible says, “Doth not even nature itself teach you, that, if a man have long hair, it is a shame unto him?” — 1 Corinthians 11:14 KJV.

Of course God cares about the heart—but genuine obedience begins in the heart and then shows itself outwardly. You cannot say, “My heart is right with God,” while knowingly disregarding what God has said.

Drunkenness is outward evidence of a person disregarding God’s command concerning sobriety. Gluttony can outwardly reveal a lack of self-control. Immodest dress can reveal disregard for biblical modesty. In the same way, when a man knowingly wears his hair contrary to what Scripture says, the outward issue reflects an inward decision: “I know what God said, but I am going to do what I want anyway.”

The heart absolutely matters—but the condition of the heart is demonstrated by whether we are willing to submit to God’s Word. Jesus said, “If ye love me, keep my commandments.” — John 14:15 KJV.

A right heart does not look for excuses to disregard Scripture. A right heart says, “God said it, therefore I want to obey it.”

Pro 4:23 “Keep thy heart with all diligence; for out of it are the issues of life.” Jesus said: “For out of the heart proceed evil thoughts, murders, adulteries, fornications, thefts, false witness, blasphemies: These are the things which defile a man…”
