Blood Supply Statistics
The Red Cross provides about 40% of our nation’s blood and blood components, all from generous volunteer donors. But supply can’t always meet demand because only about 3% of age-eligible people donate blood yearly. Each new donor helps us meet patient needs.

Blood Supply Statistics
Each year, an estimated 6.8 million people in the U.S. donate blood.
13.6 million units of whole blood and red blood cells are collected in the U.S. in a year.
About 45% of people in the U.S. have Group O (positive or negative) blood; the proportion is higher among Hispanics (57%) and African Americans (51%).
Type O negative red cells can be given to patients of all blood types. Because only 7% of people in the U.S. are type O negative, it’s always in great demand and often in short supply.
Type AB plasma can be transfused to patients of all blood types. Since only 4% of people in the U.S. have type AB blood, this plasma is usually in short supply.
Red blood cells must be used within 42 days (or less).
Platelets must be used within just 5 days.

There is a blood crisis right now and this summer donations are the lowest that they have been in 4 years.

Please make an appointment to donate blood!

The next Blood Drive at St. John is on Friday, October 2nd. Go to redcrossblood.org to sign-up for an appointment.

Summer Sunday School
Our Summer Sunday School meets on the first Sunday of the month in June, July, and August. It is for all ages and we all meet together in Classroom 4. This summer we have been learning how to pray, why to pray, who to pray for, what to give thanks for, etc. We have been writing our prayers down on Prayer cards and have hung them on a special lighted Prayer Tree which you can view in the fellowship hall. Please send your kids to the next Summer Sunday School Class on August 2 at 9:00 a.m.

Matthew 19:14 "But Jesus said, 'Let the little children come to me and do not hinder them, for to such belongs the kingdom of heaven.'"

Red Cross issues rare crisis call for donors as summer blood shortage intensifies

Patient care threatened as critical blood type levels continue to fall

For only the second time in history, the American Red Cross has declared a national blood crisis — and patients may already be feeling the impact. Donors are asked to act immediately to help save lives.

Blood donations have fallen to a four-year summer low, worsening this season’s emergency blood shortage. All blood types are needed, but the situation is especially dire for type O blood as the Red Cross is now limiting distributions of these blood products to hospitals. The supply of type O positive blood has now dropped below a one-day supply.

Help end this crisis and stabilize the blood supply. Book an appointment to give blood now by using the Blood Donor App, visiting RedCrossBlood.org or calling 1-800-RED CROSS (1-800-733-2767).
