The Quiet Room of the Heart 🕊️

There is a room inside each of us that the noise of the world rarely reaches. It is the place where prayer settles, where grief can be held gently, and where we remember that we are not separate from the sacred — we are part of it.

The Keeper of the Velada 🕯️

Today we honor María Sabina, the Mazatec sabía — "one who knows" — of Huautla de Jiménez, who carried the sacred mushroom velada through the mountains of Oaxaca. In the velada, the night vigil, candles are lit, prayers are sung, and the little ones — the niñitos, as she lovingly called the mushrooms — open the way to healing and communion with the sacred.

For centuries, this lineage was kept alive in secret. After the Spanish outlawed the veladas, the Mazatec people carried the ceremonies underground for four hundred years, weaving their ancient songs together with the Catholic faith imposed upon them — not to abandon the old way, but to protect it.

When the wider world came calling in 1955, María Sabina shared what she had been taught to share, and she paid dearly for that openness — her community disrupted, her standing among her own people shaken, her name taken up by strangers who never learned the prayers. We remember her not as a curiosity, but as a keeper of a lineage older than any of us.

May we never treat a sacrament as a souvenir. The medicine belongs to the prayer that carries it, and to the people who kept the fire lit when it was forbidden. 🙏

When Science and Stillness Walk Together 🕊️

Friends, here is a piece of news that warms our hearts: researchers at the University of Southern California have launched a clinical trial pairing psilocybin therapy with mindfulness meditation for people living with depression. With an award of up to $4 million from the Advanced Research Projects Agency for Health (ARPA-H), the team will study 80 participants, comparing psilocybin therapy with and without an eight-week mindfulness training program, to see whether the two together can deepen and sustain healing.

We have always believed that the sacred and the careful belong together — that intention, stillness, and reverent preparation are not extras, but part of the medicine's work. The researchers say something much the same: psychedelics may ignite a new perspective, but people need tools afterward to hold onto that mindset of self-exploration and discovery. The study's lead, Dr. Rael Cahn of the Keck School of Medicine of USC, designed the mindfulness program to help people better carry forward what they learn in treatment and sustain their improvements.

Reverence is not fear. It is the memory that what happens here is older than us, and will outlast us. The Mazatec women sang to the little saints; the desert peoples prayed through the night with pe**te; every lineage that carried these sacraments carried them the same way — with humility, with thanks, with trembling hands held open.

When the Law Remembers What Is Sacred 🕊️

Good news for the community of faith. After years in federal court, the Iowa-based Iowaska Church of Healing has reached an agreement with the DEA recognizing the church’s “right under the Religious Freedom Restoration Act to practice its Sacrament of Ayahuasca, subject to agreed conditions.”

This month the Iowa Board of Pharmacy granted the church a state certificate of registration, clearing the way for federal permission to import their sacrament. A years-long struggle — through the IRS’s rejection, through the courts — has found its resolution in recognition, not prohibition.

And it is part of a larger turn. In late 2024, the Church of Gaia in Spokane, Washington became the first psychedelic church to receive a DEA exemption through petition, without even bringing a lawsuit. As legal scholar Elizabeth Sepper writes in the Yale Journal on Regulation: “Contemporary shifts toward religious exemption may push courts and regulators to look more favorably on religious use of psychedelics.”

🕊️ For Those Who Carry the Wounds of Service

Some of the deepest healing work on earth is being done for those who bore its hardest burdens — our veterans and frontline workers.

Intention Is the Door 🚪

A sacrament is not defined by its chemistry alone. What makes a sacrament sacred is the container: the prayer before, the song that carries it, the trusted circle gathered around the altar. This is why traditions speak of "set and setting" — the mind we bring and the room we bring it into.

Ceremony is technology. The drumming, the silence, the agreed-upon intention — these are not decorations. They shape the encounter the way a frame shapes a window. The same medicine in a chaotic room and in a prayerful one are two different experiences, because we are different in each.

We honor the lineages who understood this first: the keepers of all-night songs, the guides who watched over the vulnerable hours, the elders who taught that integration — what you carry back into your family and community — matters more than what you saw.

Approach these medicines as a congregation does communion: with preparation, with witnesses, with humility. Reverence is not fear. It is respect given its proper shape. 🕊️

Those Who Kept the Fire Lit 🔥

Long before these medicines were ever studied in laboratories, they were carried — by singers and roadmen, by grandmothers and prayer warriors who sat with them through all-night ceremonies in the tipi: prayer, song, and sacrament around a crescent-shaped earthen altar and a sacred fire.

The road was not easy. In an age when their ceremonies were raided and their plants seized and burned, the people of the Native American Church organized themselves as churches to keep the fire lit — and their persistence was finally written into law in 1994, when Congress amended the American Indian Religious Freedom Act to protect the sacramental use of pe**te by members of federally recognized tribes.

We claim no part of their ceremony as our own. But we bow in gratitude to the lineages who held on when it cost them everything — because the religious freedom our movement walks in today was not granted, it was endured into being. 🙏

The Right to Ceremony Is Still Being Fought — And It Deserves Our Witness

On October 5, the 10th Circuit Court of Appeals ruled that Utah may proceed with prosecuting Bridger Jensen, founder of the religious group Singularism, over sacramental use of psilocybin mushrooms seized from his center in 2024. A federal judge had blocked the prosecution last year on religious freedom grounds; the appellate court reversed that injunction, not because Jensen's faith claim failed, but on a procedural doctrine that keeps federal courts from interrupting ongoing state cases.

Here's what matters for us: his claim under Utah's Religious Freedom Restoration Act was NOT rejected. It was sent back to the lower court for further consideration. The question of whether sincere sacramental use is protected still stands, waiting for its answer.

From the Native American Church's pe**te exemption to the Supreme Court's 2006 UDV ruling on ayahuasca, the right to ceremony has always been won case by case, generation by generation. This is one more of those cases. We hold the Singularism community in our prayers as the fight continues.

Good News from Tampa: The Sacrament's Science Marches On 🌱

Right here in our own backyard, a Tampa biopharmaceutical company called Psilera has just been cleared to begin Phase 2 of its NIH-backed research into alcohol use disorder — built on non-hallucinogenic psilocybin derivatives, alongside collaborator Dr. Danielle Gulick at the University of South Florida. Phase 1 already showed promising results reducing alcohol consumption in animal studies, and the next phase moves the work toward a first human trial anticipated in 2027.

We hold in prayer everyone still chained by alcohol — a suffering the conventional medicine cabinet has never fully answered.
