Lisa and I have been down with respiratory crud this week.

So tomorrow will be different.
We will not have service at Monroe, but our pianist at Mt Olivet will lead a hymn sing service at 9:30 for both congregations at Mt. Olivet UMC.
46 Mt Olivet Church Rd., Lynchburg, VA 24504, 460 East past Mt Athos Rd to top of Thomas Terrace hill.

CALL TO WORSHIP – August 16, 2026
This Sunday we continue in the Gospel of Matthew, chapter 15: 21-33 with another prologue from verses 10-20. The message, THE CANAANITE WOMAN: “Faith that Brings Change”, takes us on an unsettling encounter between Jesus and a woman with an urgent need.

But she was not Jewish. That mattered, and it almost prevented her from finding the healing her daughter so desperately needed. Almost!

There are times when what we need is outside our grasp, either by availability or affordability. And sometimes, by notability. The hymn, “Tell Me the Stories of Jesus,” speaks of the stories that tell of people with great faith in times of great need. This is one of those stories.

And I have Good News! It’s a true story!

CALL TO WORSHIP – August 9, 2026
This Sunday we turn to the Gospel of Matthew, chapter 14: 22-33 with a prologue from verses 13-21. Our message, THE GOSPEL CALL: “The Blessing & The Mission”, leads us to an important understanding of what Jesus said and what it means for us as his 21st Century Disciples.

I remember the days of growing up with my four brothers, my mom and dad, plus our half-brother with whom we shared the same father. Life seemed so simple back then, and technologically it was. Things were very different than the way things are today.

(I often chide my friends for being too nostalgic and stuck in the past, but I see now that I can get as tuck as anyone! Gasoline: .299!)

But back to life back then. Dad would look at the front yard and say, “Boy! The grass sure needs cutting!” Immediately we new what that meant: he wasn’t going to cut it, he wanted one of us to cut it. So, by days end the grass would be cut and one of us would be resting, drinking a pop.

We often look at the Bible from a “What Would Jesus Do?” perspective, and that’s a good perspective to have. But I wonder if there isn.t a better question. Not what would he do, but “What Did Jesus Say to Do?”

The thing is, He’s still saying it!

CALL TO WORSHIP – August 2, 2026
This Sunday we step away from the writings of the Apostle Paul and consider the inspired writings of David in one of his 73 Psalms, Psalm 17. All the other Psalms were written by five other authors, but most were influenced by David. That is all but Moses in Psalms 90-106.

For me, and when we’re done I hope for all of us, this Psalm gives us something for which I think we are all searching. It’s something we long for in this chaotic world into which we’ve been cast. Our world is chaotic and complex, and it asks us to hop on and join in.

One way we see that is by how constantly connected we are, to each other, to our jobs, activities, civic duties, not to mention church and family. Oh! I forgot to mention the internet, cellular services and phones. We even stay connected while we sleep!

With all of this bombarding of our brains, and consequentially our bodies, it’s no wonder many of us feel just flat worn out! It’s all just too much! I know that even when I’m off, I’m still on. And what I miss in all this complexity and noise is simplicity; peace, and quiet.

But I have good news! The message title rose up like a Zinnia plant, tall and bright! “Living a Simple Life” hopes to send us home with what we’ve been searching for; a way to live where peace and quiet in this chaotic, complex, noisy world becomes our new normal

Our new life!

CALL TO WORSHIP – July 26, 2026
This Sunday we continue our series on the Apostle Paul’s letter to the Roman church. Like our previous messages, this one also finds its title in the text of the Scripture for this week: Romans 8:26-39. “We Are More Than Conquerors!”

Conquerors: What a strong word! By itself, at least for me, it brings up images of warriors conquering their adversaries, or modern armies obliterating other countries. But conquering isn’t always about military war. Paul starts off with our needing God’s help to find the right words.

Anyone who has stepped into the pulpit knows about that battle. In Nehemiah 2, before approaching the king, the royal cupbearer prays for the right words. Words can make the difference between success and failure. IN Nehemiah’s case, the sacked city of Jerusalem was rebuilt.

But we all face obstacles in life, times when we ourselves need help. Not just with words, but with physical, emotional and spiritual matters. The Apostle gives the Roman believers a way to become more than conquers, people of faith who face life victoriously!

Today, he is telling to us modern day believers how to be more than conquerors!
