REMINDER: Advent Season is not a Christmas Season
The season of Advent is often misunderstood as part of the Christmas celebration, but in the Catholic Church, it is a distinct liturgical season with its own spiritual purpose. Advent is a time of waiting, preparation, and spiritual renewal. It invites the faithful to reflect on the coming of Christ, not only in history at Bethlehem but also in our hearts today and in His final coming at the end of time.
Unlike the Christmas season, which celebrates the joy and fulfillment of Christ’s birth, Advent is penitential and reflective, similar in spirit to Lent. Its liturgical colors, Scripture readings, and prayers emphasize hope, repentance, and the anticipation of salvation rather than the immediate joy of the Nativity. Advent calls us to prepare inwardly, purify our hearts, and heighten our awareness of God’s presence, so that when Christmas arrives, we can fully enter into the mystery and wonder of the Incarnation with readiness and gratitude.
In essence, Advent is not Christmas. It is a sacred time of expectation, a spiritual journey that leads to the celebration of Christ’s birth, reminding us that true joy flows from preparation, not merely from festivity.
