Black History IS History
The 1917 Silent Protest Parade was on Fifth Avenue in New York City (from 57th Street down to Madison Square). An estimated 8,000 to 10,000 black men, women, and children marched in silence. The march was conceived by James Weldon Johnson and organized by the NAACP alongside local church and community leaders. The march was a direct response to horrific acts of racial terror and anti-Black violence, most notably the brutal East St. Louis race riot in Illinois (July 1917), which resulted in numerous deaths and thousands displaced. Appalling lynchings occurred in Waco, Texas, and Memphis, Tennessee.
The protesters marched in total silence, broken only by the muffled beat of a drum core. Women and children wore pristine white clothes to symbolize innocence, while men carried banners demanding justice and a federal anti-lynching law. As the first major African American civil rights demonstration of its kind, it set a powerful precedent for future activism and public protest.
