Black History IS History. Allensworth, California, was an all Black
township. Established in 1908 by Colonel Allen Allensworth and a group of other African American men, it was the first in
California to be founded, financed, and governed by Black Americans. Allensworth was a refuge for Black people to be wholly self-reliant and live the American Dream. The town contained its own small businesses and school district by 1912. At the height of its success in the 1920s, there were around 300 residents. Severe drought and the discovery of arsenic in the water supply led to the loss of residents in the 1960s and 70s. In 1974, the town became a state historic park and hosts seasonal events to preserve its history.
