Anniversary photos/scrap book: We want to put together a slide show of digital pictures and scrap books for physical pictures for our 75th anniversary! If you have any digital pictures from GLC, please send them to me (please also let me know what they are and when they are from). If you have physical pictures, please send them to Janie. ALSO: Janie needs help compiling and organizing the photos. If you can help in any way, please let her know! J





We have many opportunities for ministry!

Food Pantry: This is an on-gong ministry, and we always need donations! Items that go especially quickly are meal items (spaghetti and sauce, SpaghettiOs/ravioli, Vienna sausage, canned beans, rice, etc.) Anything with a pop-top is especially appreciated! However, we need it all, even vegetables, too! Thank you for your generosity!

Related: Paul is organizing a group to go into the neighborhood and put out fliers and bags for a neighborhood food drive. If you are interested in helping out with this outreach, please let us know! J



Rowley School Donations: Starting after July 4, we will begin to collect items for Rowley School (when school supplies go on sale). The supplies she said are needed are: pens (blue/black), pencils, single subject spiral notebooks, loose leaf paper, and folders, individually wrapped snacks, and sodas (for teachers). Thank you! J

Noisy Offering/Disaster Response: Throughout the summer, we will have a “noisy offering” – that means your loose change, but it can also be ”quiet” like bills or checks – that will go toward disaster response. This is give us a reserve which we can use to address the needs after a bad storm. If we are spared from storms this season, we will give a portion of what we collect to go to the Footprint Project (the people behind our solar batter hub, AKA George) to go toward other community lighthouse projects. Reach into your coin jars this summer! Thank you!



Glass Half Full recycling: Their facility is off Paris Rd. by the Sheriff’s Dept., and we can recycle our glass there!

Glass Half Full takes the glass donations and turns it into sand for sandbags during hurricane season and sand for coastal restoration! It’s a win-win! If you are unable to bring your glass to the Glass Half Full drop site, you can bring it to church, and we’ll drop it off. Thanks!



Bottle Cap Recycling: While we are finished collecting bottle caps for our friend in the Sheriff’s Dept. for the memorial bench, he is still collecting them for other projects! He needs bottle caps with a recycle code of 2. 4, or 5 in the recycle triangle. This includes not only bottle caps from drinks but also the caps from liquid laundry detergent. NOTE: please take out the rubber ring before dropping them off. We will continue to collect them until I hear otherwise! Thank you!

Trying to Reason with Hurricane Season – Jimmy Buffet Hurricane Prep:

Ok, we know the drill:

1. I am attaching the “72 Hour Lutheran” handout, to help you prepare to take care of yourself for at least 72 hours. I am also including the St. Bernard Emergency Preparedness website: https://www.sbpg.net/165/Homeland-Security-Emergency-Preparedness which has a lot of good information. The state website is : www.getagameplan.org

2. Related, if you or someone you know needs help evacuating during a storm, please register on the St. Bernard Emergency Preparedness website NOW, before there is a need.

3. Please check the directory, to make sure we have the correct information to reach out to you, especially email!

4. Please listen to trusted sources for information about the storm, including major TV radio stations or local government Facebook or websites. There is a lot of bad information that goes out on social media – make sure you know and trust the source.

5. No heroic measures – please follow official statements. If they say hunker down, make sure you’re prepared. If they say evacuate, go! GLC will follow official statements, and if necessary, cancel worship and just have video recorded worship.

6. Very Important: In case of emergency, the ways we will reach out to everyone will be email and Facebook. We cannot promise that the phones will be working during an emergency.

7. Most Important – Pray!

Hi, everyone!





Today we celebrate the history and independence of the United States as well as the long history of Native Americans in North America before the birth of our nation. I invite you to pray for the wisdom and resolve we need to ensure freedom, justice and equity for all people — in our nation and around the world. I also want to share with you a message for America at 250 by Presiding Bishop Yehiel Curry.

America at 250: Holding gratitude and humility



Dear church,



As we look toward the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence, many of us will celebrate with fireworks, parades and barbecues. Independence Day often brings us together with family and friends. Yet there is more that connects us than our communal celebrations. We are also connected through a common vision.



Signed in 1776, the Declaration of Independence proclaims a vision of equality for all people. While there were other nations pushing for equality at the time, the declaration was and is a monumental document in the way it names the aspiration so boldly. As we observe and celebrate the 250th anniversary of that signing, we also affirm the vision of freedom and equality it casts. We can be grateful.



And with contrition and humility, we acknowledge all the ways we have failed to embody that vision. As members of this church, we are called to “pray, participate in, and advocate for civic life in the United States that reflects God’s activity and call, which seek both the well-being of all people and a creation marked by justice and peace” (ELCA social statement Faith and Civic Life, p. 89).



As Lutherans, we know the importance of naming realities for what they are. As citizens, we confess the ways we have not yet realized the vision of the Declaration of Independence and, more importantly, as Christians we confess the ways we have participated in or been complicit in failures to live into the vision God provides. This vision is rooted in creation and redemption. God crafts each person in God’s own image and sends Jesus Christ to redeem us, setting us free to follow Christ’s new commandment to love one another.



The history of the United States is complex, and all too often we have fallen short of our stated values. Indigenous peoples across this land have been forced to cede their ancestral homes and pushed to reservations. Women and men have been prevented from voting because of their s*x and race and spat on and jailed when they demanded their rights. Japanese American families were interned during World War II. Q***r and transgender people’s lives are obstructed by federal and state orders.



There is a photograph of Elizabeth Eckford, one of the nine Black teenagers who integrated Little Rock Central High School in Little Rock, Ark., in 1957. Books under her arm, she faces forward as angry white people crowd behind her. She was just trying to go to school.



Holding both the failures and the vision in our hearts and minds, I invite us to ask ourselves, “What does it mean to celebrate a promise that is real and yet still unfolding? What does it mean to be a people who always live in ‘the already but not yet’”?



This is a central question for us not only as we mark the anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence but also in our daily lives as people of faith. The prophets repeatedly remind us of the vision God casts for all of creation, and they call us to account when, as God’s own people, we fall short.



When we fall short, we remember we are rooted in the resurrection of Jesus Christ. We think, speak and live out faith through God’s future. God’s future is resurrection. As a church, we are turned not only to the past but to the future God is making possible right now through us as we love and serve others.



As Lutheran Christians, we believe that God calls us to:

• Remember our connection to each other through baptism, as Scripture teaches us: “We, who are many, are one body in Christ, and individually we are members one of another” (Romans 12:5).

• Name sin for what it really is and to repent of it, as the Augsburg Confession and the catechisms remind us.

• Serve the common good in society as “earthly measures toward God’s intention” (Faith and Civic Life, p. 11).



As we celebrate 250 years of the Declaration of Independence, we can hold gratitude and humility, possibilities and shortcomings. We continue to live in the already and the not-yet.



And we hold fast to the most important promise of all: the presence of God with us, the power of the resurrection of Christ, the accompaniment of the Holy Spirit and the ever-unfolding grace of God.



We celebrate this occasion neither as a perfect nation nor as a perfect church but as a people held in God’s grace and called into community in service to all neighbors and for the sake of the world God so loves.

Bottle Cap Recycling: While we are finished collecting bottle caps for our friend in the Sheriff’s Dept. for the memorial bench, he is still collecting them for other projects! He needs bottle caps with a recycle code of 2. 4, or 5 in the recycle triangle. This includes not only bottle caps from drink but also the caps from liquid laundry detergent. NOTE: please take out the rubber ring before dropping them off. We will continue to collect them until I hear otherwise! Thank you! J

Trying to Reason with Hurricane Season – Jimmy Buffet Hurricane Prep:

Ok, we know the drill:

1. I am attaching the “72 Hour Lutheran” handout, to help you prepare to take care of yourself for at least 72 hours. I am also including the St. Bernard Emergency Preparedness website: https://www.sbpg.net/165/Homeland-Security-Emergency-Preparedness which has a lot of good information. The state website is : www.getagameplan.org

2. Related, if you or someone you know needs help evacuating during a storm, please register on the St. Bernard Emergency Preparedness website NOW, before there is a need.

3. Please check the directory, to make sure we have the correct information to reach out to you, especially email!

4. Please listen to trusted sources for information about the storm, including major TV radio stations or local government Facebook or websites. There is a lot of bad information that goes out on social media – make sure you know and trust the source.

5. No heroic measures – please follow official statements. If they say hunker down, make sure you’re prepared. If they say evacuate, go! GLC will follow official statements, and if necessary, cancel worship and just have video recorded worship.

6. Very Important: In case of emergency, the ways we will reach out to everyone will be email and Facebook. We cannot promise that the phones will be working during an emergency.

7. Most Important – Pray!
