No pictures were taken, but history was made today at the first-ever “pulpit swap” between three congregations linked by history, geography and shared mission in Southeastern Jackson County.

Paul Copeland (SAM) and Pastor Brian Coffey exchanged pulpits and presided over Our Lord’s Supper at each other’s congregations of call.

Mt Calvary (DeSoto), First Lutheran (Murphysboro) and Epiphany (Carbondale) each experienced a different preacher and worship leader on a Sunday morning.

This exchange reflects our common heritage of mission in our individual communities, spearheaded by Mt Calvary who planted First Lutheran in 1867 and Epiphany in 1960.

While the generations have changed our mission for Christ has not; expressed now through our shared affiliation through the Central/Southern Illinois Synod of the ELCA.

Thanks be to God for calling us to be the body of Christ in this time and place!

Epiphany’s “Let’s Get Cookin’” event brought together 17 children and nine adults today for an afternoon of baking, prayer and service. The group made more than eight dozen cookies for future fellowship events and began discussing how the remaining Thrivent grant funds could help people in need through local organizations and school-supply projects. Thank you to everyone who donated ingredients, organized supplies, guided the children and helped make today’s event such a success!

Here’s a picture with most of us who participated from the Central/Southern Illinois Synod of the ELCA. It was especially meaningful to hear Presiding Bishop Yehiel Curry preach and teach in person!
