📚🌟 Plaquemines Parish Students Rank 5th in Louisiana 🌟📚

The latest End-of-Year K-3 Literacy Screener results from the Louisiana Department of Education show Plaquemines Parish Schools are ranked 5th in the state for students reading on grade level in Kindergarten through 3rd Grade. This outstanding achievement places our district among Louisiana's top-performing schools in early literacy.

Reading proficiency in early grades is one of the strongest indicators of future academic success.

The statewide literacy screener helps educators measure foundational reading skills and provide targeted support to students during their most important learning years.

We are proud of this achievement and remain committed to ensuring every student has the skills and support needed to succeed.

Today was a sweet day as our 79th Royalty and members of the Plaquemines Parish Orange Festival gathered to celebrate “A slice of Plaquemines”! 🍊🍊
It is a beautiful sculpture made by the great artists of Layaya - Louisiana Young Artist & Young Authors.
This project would not have been possible without the support of Jason Campagna Papa Joe's Sno-Balls, Kim Turlich-Vaughan, Tea Bar NOLA, and our 76th Orange Queen Isa Rivera
The Plaquemines Parish Orange Festival thanks everyone who attended this dedication and we especially enjoyed the wonderful citrus snowball that is a must try!! 🍊🍊

Recently, Plaquemines Parish Government held a public meeting to discuss citizen input and the submission of an application to secure funding through LA Office of Community Development (LA OCD). The purpose of this meeting was to obtain feedback on much improvements needed at our beloved Fort Jackson! 🍊🍊

Mais Weah!! 🧡🧡🍊🍊

Plaquemines Parish is one of Louisiana’s most unique and historic places. Established in 1807, Plaquemines Parish stretches down the Mississippi River to the Gulf, with Pointe à la Hache as the parish seat and Belle Chasse as its largest community. At the 2020 census, the parish had 23,515 residents.

One cool fact is where the name comes from. “Plaquemines” comes from an Atakapa word, piakimin, meaning persimmon. The French first used the name for a military post surrounded by persimmon trees, and over time it came to describe the whole parish.

Plaquemines Parish also has deep roots in Louisiana history. The area includes some of the earliest European settlement along the lower Mississippi, and Fort Jackson became a major defensive site for New Orleans. Built beginning in 1822, it later played an important role during the Civil War and is now one of the parish’s best-known historic landmarks.

Fun facts: Plaquemines Parish is famous for its fishing, seafood, citrus, and coastal beauty. It is also home to places like Venice, often called one of the top fishing spots in Louisiana, and it’s known for longtime local traditions like the Orange Festival at Fort Jackson.

From river history to coastal culture, Plaquemines Parish is one of those Louisiana places where land, water, heritage, and hard work all come together.
