We will have a donation box at Church Sunday…Bunkie Has Been Blessed (Now, How Can We Help?
On Thursday, June 18, 2026, a day that will not be easily forgotten, Bunkie was blessed beyond words to be spared the worst of the catastrophic flooding that devastated much of Avoyelles Parish.
Throughout the day, as events unfolded, Mayor Brenda Sampson and the Bunkie City Council remained in contact with Joey Frank, Director of the Avoyelles Office of Homeland Security and Emergency Preparedness, offering the Haas Auditorium as an evacuation shelter and standing by to provide whatever assistance might be required.
In addition, the City of Bunkie prepared jambalaya for first responders and evacuees from across Avoyelles Parish. At the time of this post, 11:00 p.m. on Thursday, June 18, 2026, Bunkie Fire Chief Nick Ducote and members of the Bunkie Fire Department are assisting with the evacuation of residents from Dupont Nursing Home.
To further support our fellow Avoyelleans affected by the flooding, the City of Bunkie will begin collecting cleaning supplies at Bunkie Fire Station #1, located at 103 Walnut Street. Organizations, businesses, churches, civic groups, and individuals are encouraged to donate items to support cleanup and recovery efforts as floodwaters recede.
Suggested donations include:
• Mops
• Towels
• Paper towels
• Buckets
• Rubber gloves
• Disinfecting cleaners (such as 409)
• Bleach
• Trash bags
• Sponges and scrub brushes
Additional cleaning and recovery supplies are also welcome.
Our thoughts and prayers remain with all those affected by this catastrophe. While Bunkie was fortunate to be spared the worst, many of our neighbors were not. Now is the time for us to come together and help our fellow Avoyelleans as they begin the long road to recovery.
