Some crises dominate the headlines.

Others slowly disappear from them.

But disappearing from our news feeds does not mean the suffering has ended.

In Sudan, years of war have displaced millions of people and devastated communities. As humanitarian resources are stretched increasingly thin, access to food, shelter, health care, clean water, and other basic necessities becomes even more precarious.

Across the region, our Lutheran siblings through The Lutheran World Federation's World Service are accompanying Sudanese refugees and displaced people, providing shelter, food assistance, clean water, protection, education, psychosocial support, and other forms of care.

This is diakonia lived out across borders.

It is the Church refusing to look away.

It is accompaniment that says to people whose suffering may have disappeared from the headlines:

You have not been forgotten.

Today we pray for the people of Sudan, for those forced from their homes, and for all who continue the difficult work of accompaniment, relief, advocacy, and peacemaking.

May we, too, refuse to look away.

🌍 "Be builders of bridges between peoples, cultures and religions."
Yesterday, Pope Leo XIV sent a video message to the young people of West Africa on the occasion of their first West African Youth Day, recalling one of the fundamental principles of walking together in a synodal Church.
👉"Walking together means ensuring that no one is marginalized, isolated, excluded or rejected," the Holy Father said. "We must commit ourselves to living as Jesus, our Master and Lord, lived, who excluded no one from his journey. He recognized the presence of God in those who lived on the margins of society, even in those who did not belong to his own people."
We join in prayer the young people of Africa as they celebrate their faith in Christ during these days. Let us continue to walk together, proclaiming the Gospel of the Lord. 🙏

God of work and rest, bless the labor of our hands, strengthen those who are weary, protect those whose work places them at risk, and lead us toward justice for all who labor. Amen.

Happy Labor Day!
“Pray for the dead, fight like hell for the living!”

“Mary Harris “Mother” Jones rose to prominence as a fiery orator and fearless organizer for the Mine Workers during the first two decades of the 20th century. Her voice had great carrying power. Her energy and passion inspired people half her age into action and compelled them to join in the struggle.

Born August 1, 1837, as Mary Harris in Cork County, Ireland, the woman who would become Mother Jones immigrated to North America with her family as a child to escape the Irish potato famine.

In her early 20s, she moved to Chicago, where she worked as a dressmaker, and then to Memphis, Tenn., where she met and married George Jones. The couple had four children when tragedy struck: A yellow fever epidemic in 1867, which killed hundreds of people, took the lives of Mary’s husband and all four children.

Mary moved back to Chicago and returned to commercial dressmaking. She opened her own shop, patronized by some of the wealthiest women in town. According to one account of her life, Mary’s interest in the union movement grew when she sewed for wealthy Chicago families. “I would look out of the plate glass windows and see the poor, shivering wretches, jobless and hungry, walking alongside the frozen lake front,” she said. “The tropical contrast of their condition with that of the tropical comfort of the people for whom I sewed was painful to me. My employers seemed neither to notice nor to care.”

Tragedy struck Mary again when she lost everything in the Great Chicago Fire of 1871. After the fire, Mary began to travel across the country, from town to town in support of workers’ struggles.

Mother Jones’ organizing methods were unique for her time. She welcomed African American workers and involved women and children in strikes. She staged parades with children carrying signs that read, “We Want to Go to School and Not to the Mines.”

May we be inspired by Mother Jones today to stand alongside the most vulnerable among us!

Whose work do we overlook?

As Labor Day approaches, we give thanks for the people whose work sustains our communities.

Those who harvest and prepare our food.
Those who care for children, older adults, and people who are ill.
Those who clean our buildings and maintain our roads.
Those who teach, heal, deliver, repair, build, serve, and tend.

Our faith calls us to see work not simply through the lens of productivity, but through the dignity of the person doing it.

May we honor workers not only with our gratitude, but by seeking communities in which every person is treated with dignity, fairness, and respect.

“The laborer deserves to be paid.” — Luke 10:7
