This scripture was chosen by Father Carroll to be carved into the base of the Sacred Heart statue at All Saints Church.

It reflects the foundation of his life and ministry — pointing others toward Christ in everything he did.

When Father Charles R. Carroll began serving some of the small mission communities of North Central West Virginia, being a Catholic priest wasn't always welcomed.

Parishioners recalled that children in several towns threw stones at him because they weren't accustomed to seeing a priest—or even many Catholics—in their communities.

But Father Carroll didn't give up.

He stayed.

He repaired churches with his own hands, serving as both carpenter and mason until others joined the effort. He organized food fairs that brought neighbors together, collected homemade cakes and pies from each mission, and slowly built friendships throughout the community.

The congregations grew, churches were restored, and communities that once rejected him came to love him.

It's a powerful reminder that sometimes the greatest ministry begins with patience, perseverance, and a willingness to love people before they love you back.

The church you're looking at today has a remarkable beginning.

Before St. Mary's Catholic Church in Rosemont stood as a place of worship, Father Charles R. Carroll celebrated Mass in an abandoned pool hall. With no church building available, he transformed the space into a sanctuary. Beer cases became the altar. Old theater seats became pews. An old slot machine served as a divider for the confessional, and the floor was part wood and part dirt.

It was in that humble setting that children received their First Holy Communion. After Mass, Father Carroll lined them up outside for a photograph in front of the building—beneath a sign advertising "Beer, Fireworks, and Camel Ci******es."

Today, as we look at St. Mary's Church, we're reminded that every parish has a story. This one began not with stained glass or towering steeples, but with a priest determined to bring the Eucharist to his people, no matter the circumstances.

The building changed. The mission never did.

For nearly half a century, Father Charles R. Carroll wrote every weekly bulletin himself. Every announcement, every reflection, every encouragement to his parishioners was carefully typed using his signature green ink.

It became one of the small details people remembered most—a reflection of the care he put into even the simplest parts of his ministry.

Catholic life in many communities across West Virginia was still developing when Father Carroll began his ministry. Through faith, determination, and a deep commitment to serving others, he helped build and strengthen the Church by founding missions, organizing schools, and bringing communities together.

Bridgeport first opened as a mission in 1934 with Masses held in homes. In 1946, All Saints was elevated to parish status, and Father Carroll was named its first pastor.
On May 16, 1954, the former Rachel Chapel was dedicated as All Saints Catholic Church. That same year, parish school classes began, with a dedicated school building opening in 1956. In 1973, the school became part of the Harrison County Catholic School System.

The legacy of Father Carroll’s work continues to live on through the faith communities he helped establish and grow.

Before cell phones...

Before anyone could send a quick message asking for help...
