A powerful moment from the Diocese of Wheeling-Charleston Priest and Deacon Ordination Mass.

Bishop Brennan spent several minutes reflecting on the life and example of Father Carroll, encouraging the newly ordained priest and deacon to follow his model of faithful service and dedication to God's people.

To hear Father Carroll's legacy spoken of so highly before the entire diocese is truly moving. His life continues to inspire new generations of clergy and faithful alike.

Thank you, Bishop Brennan, for sharing these beautiful words and keeping Father Carroll's example alive.

What an incredible day of discovery!

Last week, several Guild members took an excursion through the Wendel/Simpson area to explore the former site of St. Joseph Church and map out a potential future pilgrimage route connected to Father Carroll’s mission work.

Along the way, the group was led to local resident Steve Burnside, whose family owns the property where St. Joseph Church once stood. Through this unexpected connection, historic photographs, stories, and records tied to the church, the Wendel community, and Father Carroll’s ministry were uncovered.

Among the discoveries were:
• Historic photos of St. Joseph Church and the surrounding area
• A fascinating historical society rendering of both St. Joseph in Wendel and St. Mary’s in Rosemont
• Written accounts confirming stories passed down about Father Carroll and the missions
• Attendance records dating back to the 1920s

We also learned that Geneva Phelps, who documented the Wendel story, passed away in 2012. The Guild would love to connect with anyone from the Taylor County Historical Society — or anyone else — who may have memories, records, photos, or additional information related to Geneva Phelps, these churches, or Father Carroll himself.

These moments remind us how much history is still waiting to be uncovered and preserved.

Thank you to everyone involved in helping preserve and share the legacy of Father Carroll. What a blessing this journey continues to be.

One of the most important parts of any Cause for Sainthood is the testimony of ordinary people.

The Church wants to understand not only what a person accomplished, but how their life affected others spiritually.

This is one reason why preserving memories and historical records matters so much.

In the case of Father Carroll, stories continue to emerge decades after his death.

People remember him driving a green school bus to transport children to Catholic schools across rural communities. They remember him celebrating Mass in homes, building up struggling missions, comforting families during illness and grief, and remaining close to his parishioners throughout every stage of their lives.

We invite you to share any graces, favors, or miracles that you may have received. Nothing should be viewed as too insignificant to report. You may also contact us with prayer requests or general questions/information. We thank you for your sharing.

“I am the way, and the truth, and the life.” — John 14:6

This scripture was chosen by Father Carroll to be carved into the base of the Sacred Heart statue at All Saints Church.

It reflects the foundation of his life and ministry — pointing others toward Christ in everything he did.

When Father Carroll arrived in 1933, he was responsible for five mission churches — and within just a few years, that number grew to nine.

He traveled constantly between communities, often celebrating Mass in homes and makeshift spaces.

In a time when Catholic churches were few and far between, he brought faith directly to the people.

Members of the Father Carroll Guild — Vice President Pat Whalen, President Joe Deegan, and Guild Mission Representative Al Quagliotti, pictured here with Bishop Mark Brennan — were honored to attend the Convocation this week at the Saint John XXIII Pastoral Center to share the story and growing cause for the sainthood of Father Charles R. Carroll.

We are grateful for the opportunity to connect with clergy and faithful from across the Diocese, continue spreading awareness of Father Carroll’s life of humble service, and invite others to learn more about his legacy and cause for canonization.

Please continue to keep the Cause for Sainthood of Father Carroll in your prayers.
