God's first question after the fall was not about the sin. It was about the source.
When the Creator walked through the trees looking for the man he made, He already knew exactly what was going on. He was not playing hide-and-seek. He was looking at a crime scene.
When Adam shouted from behind the bushes that he was hiding because he was naked, God did not ask who stole his clothes. He asked a question that looks simple on paper, but should shake you to your core.
"Who told you that you were naked?"
In other words, Who gave you this information about yourself. The question was not about nakedness. It was about the source of the information.
Look at how the enemy actually works. The devil had no real power to force Adam or Eve to touch that fruit. He had no guns, no chains, and no way to force their hands. So he did something much worse. He took the exact words God spoke, twisted them slightly, and tricked them. He made humanity use their own strength to break their own hearts.
They used their own hands to build their own prison.
When God looked at the leaves they used to cover themselves, he was not looking at clothes. He was looking at fear. He was asking about where they got their news. He was saying, "Where did you learn the words for shame? Who gave you permission to call yourself broken when I already called you beautiful?"
God is still asking the same question. With the same searching tone He used when He called out "Where are you?" Not demanding. Finding.
Who convinced you that the reason your spouse packed their bags and left is because you are just impossible to love?
Who whispered to you that if your own mother could not find a reason to stay and raise you, nobody else will ever want to keep you either?
Who told you that your miscarriage was God punishing you for the mistakes of your past?
Who told you that you are only meant to be loved for a short time before people find someone better and leave you behind?
Who told you that you are broken beyond repair?
Who told you that you are not loved?
Who told you that you are abandoned?
Who told you that your past disqualifies your future?
Who told you that you are too much for the people around you?
Who told you that you are not enough?
Who told you that God is disappointed in you?
Who told you that your sin is too great for grace?
Who told you that you will always be this way?
Who told you that what happened to you is what you are?
Who told you that you are a burden nobody wants to carry?
Who told you that nobody truly sees you?
Who told you that the good things are for other people and not for you?
Who told you that God stopped listening?
Who told you that the silence means He left?
Who told you that you have to earn your way back?
Who told you that you are too far gone?
Who told you that you are not worthy of being found?
None of those voices are My Father’s voice. God never handed you those razor blades.
The enemy took your pain, your history, your failure, your wound and offered you a conclusion about what it means. And somewhere along the way you agreed with it. You spoke it. You lived from it. You organized your entire relationship with God around it.
You did not get that heavy, sick feeling in your stomach from your Father in heaven. You picked it up from a bitter, angry parent who treated you like an inconvenience when you were a child. You got it from a cold father whose approval you are still begging for even though he has been dead for ten years. You took it from an abusive ex who left you so damaged that you now think peace is just the scary quiet time before the next fight.
The worst part of your life is that you have taken the ugly words of your abusers and your failures, and you have believed them like they are the Bible.
You are running away from the only love that can actually heal you. You are using anxiety, perfectionism, and anger like a shield just to keep people from seeing how badly you are bleeding inside.
Look at how sad this is. You are acting as the judge and the executioner of your own soul. You are using a law that God tore up a long time ago. You are like a rich person starving to death on the street because you believed a letter a homeless person wrote about your bank account.
Stop treating the bad thoughts in your head like they come from God. Stop letting a liar tell you what a masterpiece is worth.
He used the same strategy against Jesus in Matthew 4:3 "If you are the Son of God." Starting with the identity God had just declared at the baptism; "This is my beloved Son" and inserting a question mark. See? its the Same source and mechanism. Jesus answered the only way it can be answered. "It is written." He refused to negotiate with the reinterpretation. He went straight back to what God had said before the question mark was induced by the enemy.
God's response to Adam and Eve was not what they expected. He covered them. The first blood in Scripture was not shed as judgment. It was shed as a garment. He rebuked nothing. He covered everything. The first act of grace in human history was God addressing what shame had exposed before anything else was said.
Every shame-based belief you carry has a source. And the source was never the One who made you.
Who told you that you were naked?
