It is in everyday life experiences that we learn about the many emotions that drive our perception of truth and reality. Let us look, for example, at a routine visit to the doctor for a checkup. The truth of the matter is, in our mind we have already made the outcome our reality. It is routine, nothing strange about it. When we consent to a routine checkup the outcome could be anything. The very definition of truth is described as that which is in accordance with fact or reality. On the other hand, reality is described as that which exists.
How do we experience these concepts when we look at the routine doctor’s visit? When the routine visit turns into a session of giving us news that just makes no sense? Maybe it is a chronic disease that was not there before or maybe it is cancer. All along there was no warning sign, no preparing you for the outcome, which now is a stark contrast to what your perception was of routine. And just like that, our reality changes direction in such a way that it simply makes no sense. We simply do not understand how this is possible.
The Apostle Paul, in his teachings to the Philipians, recognizes the facts and reality of confusion, doubt, or when things simply make no sense. His exhortation is to stand firm, to rejoice even during suffering, and to not be anxious.The writing took place during the time of his imprisonment in Rome. He prepared himself for the outcome of a possible execution.It makes no sense to think that someone chosen by God, serving God and teaching others could be facing this dilemma. It is truly inspiring to see the Apostle Paul’s faith and trust in God even when it makes no sense, and even when the outcome might look dark.
When things make no sense, our first resort might be to become anxious because our reality has just changed, or our perception of reality becomes dark. What we turn to in the moment of confusion, or in the middle of the storm, is a compass leading the direction our life will take.
Paul, in his teachings, encourages people to pray so that, when hardships come, they depend on Him and His provision rather than the unknowns of this world. From God, there is a peace beyond understanding, a peace that only He can give us during a storm.
Self-Reflection: Take a moment to reflect on the questions you asked when something just makes no sense in your life. What or who did you turn to in those moments?
“Rejoice in the Lord alway: and again I say, Rejoice. Let your moderation be known unto all men. The Lord is at hand. Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God. And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.”
