Twenty-Third Sunday in Ordinary Time - Not My Problem
Ever notice how people today like to ignore the evil in the world? People will witness a mugging and not bother to call the police. We see television stories of children starving in poor countries and say, “Not my problem.” The readings for this Sunday challenge this attitude.
In the Gospel, Jesus’ words teach us something about our duty to the sinner. First, he tells us that sin is our problem, and when we see it we need to take the initiative to stop it. Second, he tells us we need not feel alone in this duty. When the sinner refuses to listen, we bring in help. In fact, this command is meant for the whole church. Third, he tells us to be persistent; don’t give up on someone too easily.
So what about that line about treating the sinner who refuses to listen as a Gentile or tax collector? On the one hand, the sinner would be excluded from the church, excommunicated, if he doesn’t repent. On the other hand, Jesus never rejected tax collectors (like Matthew himself, who wrote this Gospel) or Gentiles. He said he came to call sinners, to save them. He loves sinners. And that is the reason we are to confront them—not to punish them, but to love them. For God never forces a person to repent. God invites with love, especially the love Jesus showed by dying on the cross. May we all learn to fight evil with love!

Tomorrow is officially Hunger Action Month! Our St. Isidore Hunger ministry will be collecting items to benefit our local food pantry in Glendale Heights. Each weekend there is a different theme. Twenty-Second Sunday in Ordinary Time - The Eyes of a Child

Christian churches sometimes advertise that they are a contemporary, casual church. One thing that concerns me is that they do not add “challenging” to that description. Some people try to teach that since Jesus is risen from the dead, we should also be able to live that way—rejoicing, but never sorrowing. But if we preach resurrection without the cross, we are acting like Peter in the Gospel.
Peter had just proclaimed that Jesus was the Messiah, but he failed to understand that Jesus’ mission was not to bring wealth and glory to Israel. Like Satan’s temptations in the desert, he wanted Jesus to take the easy way to glory.
Instead, Jesus challenges us to deny ourselves. As long as we center our lives on our own pleasure and comfort, we are rejecting the cross. To deny oneself means to choose God’s will over our own. It means to be willing to suffer for being honest. It means giving God the first place in our lives. It means we get more joy from serving others than serving ourselves.
That is one reason I like the image of God as father. Parents will lose much of their freedom—and much sleep—when they bring a child into the world. But they find a new joy in the eyes of that child. We are all called to lose our selfish lives and find the joy of living for Jesus.
