Hebron Lutheran Church

Hebron Lutheran Church Hebron Lutheran Church is a congregation of the South Western Pennsylvania Synod of the Evangelical Church in America (ELCA). Liturgical worship at 10:45am Rev.

History
On July 1, 1827, a small group of 21 Lutherans who had been attracted to the thriving community of Blairsville were organized into a congregation called Hebron Lutheran Church. Nicholas G. Sharrets, a pastor in Indiana who had been conducting services on occasion to this small group prior to its organization, became its first pastor. This was the first distinctive English Lutheran Church

to be established west of the Allegheny Mountains. The first house of worship owned by the congregation was a log church erected on Walnut Street in 1827 at a cost of $1,000. In 1835 the congregation received a liberal gift of two lots on the comer of North Liberty and West Campbell Streets from Elder Henry Graff. That location remains the site of the present church structure. Some 50 years later the building was extensively remodeled at a cost of $5,500. A final remodeling took place in 1926 under Rev. W Blair Claney at a cost of over $30,000, which included the addition of our present Sunday school wing. More important than the buildings were the people who through the years have been strengthened and inspired by the good and faithful leadership of its pastors. In the early days the church was not only the center for worship but it was the nucleus of social life in the community. Throughout these 183 years, Hebron faithfully accomplished ministry. Continuously providing a place of Lutheran worship for generations of Blairsville area families. The community relied on Hebron in times of duress to care for the needy in and around Blairsville. Hebron members responded notably providing meals in the Great Depression of the 1930s and to the present with volunteers and materials for the victims of Hurricane Katrina in 2005. This tradition of mission continues in our present ministry focus.

Several weeks ago during Worship we received a Christmas card. Yes, you read this correctly! The front said, "When you get right down to it, the only thing that really matters is Jesus."
Shepherd Steve is reading from the Spark Bible, page 224, Escape from Egypt. How does this tie into Christmas? God warned Mary and Joseph that their baby was in danger. Listen to the story to find out what was happening. Remember, no matter the day, Jesus is what really matters!

Our God is wonderful! To think that from the smallest insect , to the largest rhinoceros, to the most fragrant flower, to the tallest mountain peak, God made all of these things and so much more! Listen to Shepherd Steve as he reads from the Spark Story Bible, page 158. What is it that God wants us to do? We are so lucky and blessed!

How many times have you waited and waited for something and you finally decided to just give up? What would you do if someone asked you to do something that seemed absolutely impossible? Would you try or say I can't ? Shepherd Steve is going to tell us about a man named Noah who was asked to do the impossible and share his conversation with his special guest. Listen to find out what God asked him to do. It is really amazing both his task and how much he trusted God! The story begins on page 20 in the Spark Story Bible. Do you think you can be as faithful as Noah?

Have you ever found a caterpillar? They are pretty special. After they have eaten their fill they spin a chrysalis or cocoon where something pretty amazing happens! Can you guess what it will be when it is ready to leave its chrysalis? It is no longer a caterpillar but a beautiful butterfly! Shepherd Steve is reading the story "The Empty Tomb" on page 482 in the Spark Story Bible for this Easter morning. Jesus was put in a tomb but when the visitors came something very special had happened! Listen to the story to hear the good news! Like a butterfly embarking on a new beginning, we too can have new beginnings with Jesus! Alleluia!!
