Grace on Display

“When Jesus had lifted up himself, and saw none but the woman, he said unto her, Woman, where are those thine accusers? hath no man condemned thee? She said, No man, Lord. And Jesus said unto her, Neither do I condemn thee: go, and sin no more.” (John‬ ‭8‬:‭10‬-‭11‬ ‭KJV)‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬

Jesus had earlier spoken with a man named Nicodemus, a Jewish ruler who approached Him one night seeking to understand how to be saved from his sin. At that time, Jesus declared that He had not come to condemn people for their sin but to save them from it (John 3:17).

Now Jesus demonstrates this truth with a woman whom the Jewish leaders brought to Him after catching her in the act of adultery—punishable by stoning according to the law (Lev. 20:10).

Jesus did not condemn her, though He knew, as she knew as well, that what she (and the absent man) had done was wrong. Jesus illustrated to her, and to us, that “all have sinned and come short of the glory of God” (Rom. 3:23). He offered her forgiveness, the same forgiveness that is available to all of us who willingly accept it from Jesus’ nail-pierced hands.
