It happens to all of us: you’re watching Lion King for a peaceful movie night with your kids when Mufasa falls into a stampeding herd of wildebeests. All of the sudden you’re crying as Simba tries to wake up his lifeless father, and your 4 year old looks up at you and says “dad, why isn’t Mufasa getting up? And why are you crying? And Scar said he’s “dead,” what does that mean?” Now your movie night has turned into trying to explain mortality to a child who just learned to spell their own name two weeks ago.

Talking about big questions with your kids can be intimidating, especially because as soon as we get into matters of faith, mortality, and spirituality it’s easy to feel out of our depth. Think of the kinds of questions your kids have asked: what happens when we die? why did grandma get sick/die? why can’t I see God? who made God? why don’t other kids in my class go to church/believe in Jesus? And these are just a start! If we think that talking to our kids about faith or God is primarily about having answers, we may never do it at all. But it’s too important to ignore..so what’s a mom or dad to do?

On May 3, John and Matt will host a “fireside chat” in the Fellowship Room we’re calling “How to talk to your kids about God.” We’ll share a little bit about our approach to talking to our own kids and to children in general about big questions about life, God, and faith, and then we’ll have plenty of time for conversation, questions, and insight from you about “God-talk” in the home.

Wine and cheese will be provided, and more importantly, so will childcare. Join us for a meaningful evening, meet like-minded parents, and enrich your family culture. We hope to see you there! Link in bio!
