Following his beatification, he will be known as Blessed Fulton J. Sheen.

“Reimagining Women’s Health: Culture, Structure, and the Path Forward.”

Women’s healthcare in the United States is broken. It often takes five to ten years for a woman to receive a diagnosis for common chronic conditions affecting her reproductive system, and treatment often focuses on managing symptoms rather than addressing the underlying condition. The causes of these failures are legion, ranging from insufficient theories of health to reimbursement systems that incentivize profit and efficiency over integral health. In this talk, Christy and Grant Martsolf will explore these challenges and how women’s health can be improved by providers motivated by a proper vision of health and care, equipped with the right tools and incentives.

Christy Martsolf is FEMM-trained board-certified Adult Nurse Practitioner. Grant Martsolf is a professor at the University of Pittsburgh and a fellow of the Institute for Family Studies. Together they co-own the Headwaters Clinic—a family-run integrative primary care clinic specializing in hormone dysregulation and women’s health.

Pittsburgh Brownstone Supper Club is pleased to welcome Ann Bauer, as she presents “Chronological Certainty and the Crackdown on Speech.”

C.S. Lewis wrote about this phenomenon (as Chronological Snobbery) that has become hardened in today’s elite academic world. It’s the fallacy that whatever science came before modern “discoveries” was faulty, naive, and suspect. But everything researchers say, believe, or divine TODAY is indisputable fact. Coupled with speech laws banning misinformation, it allows a small, self-interested group of so-called scientists to dictate “truth.” It is regressive. The Vanishing Family, a widely-publicized forthcoming book by bestselling author Robert Kolker, underscores this trend.

Ann Bauer is a novelist, essayist, and co-founder of the publishing app Storyalīz, which was developed to improve literacy and critical thinking.

“Culture and Compulsivity: Can X and other Similar Platforms Really Help Us in our Struggle to Stay Human?”.

Culture is the soil in which we grow and develop as human beings. It precedes each of us into being and thus shapes us in fundamental ways. One of the essential tasks of adults in most societies throughout history has been to pass its structures and the knowledge they contain on to the rising generations, and should those structures begin to fail at the tasks generating social stability and transmitting vital cultural knowledge to the same young, to generate new cultural institutions that will do so in a more apt and efficient manner.

This latter labor is never easy as it requires that the would-be reformers truly understand the history of what it is that he or she is trying to re-make, a process that, in turn, requires a healthy allotment of time for mindful contemplation.

Consumerism, the dominant social ethos of our times, is different from all the other guiding ideologies that preceded it in its ferocious disdain for both contemplation and pre-existing cultural knowledge. It, and the profit-seeking media that serve its interests seek, above all, to play upon natural human fascination with novelty to generate compulsive behaviors that consign the citizenry to living in an eternally juvenile present, cut off from the historical wisdom needed to respond to the our social challenges we face in new and creative ways.

Is it reasonable to think that a new and renewed humanism can emerge from such spaces? Or should we perhaps be looking more intently in other places?
