When any of you enters the masjid, do not sit down until you have prayed two rakat. (Bukhari) These are not a ritual honoring the building. The building cannot honor you back. They are for you. You are arriving from the outside world with your transactions, worries, and conversations still in your head. You sit in that state and your salah will be in that state. The two rakat cut it. They move you from the frame of the street to the frame of worship. Leave and return: do them again.
