If it shifts the focus from what Christ has DONE to what we must DO, it’s gotta go.

If it leaves people trusting their performance instead of Christ’s finished work, it’s gotta go.

If it causes people to spend more time looking at themselves than looking at Jesus, it’s gotta go.

If it makes God’s love feel earned, maintained, or dependent on our effort, it’s gotta go.

If it turns the Christian life into a never-ending treadmill of striving, proving, and measuring up, it’s gotta go.

The gospel is not, “Do more.”
The gospel is, “Jesus has done enough.”

The gospel is not just the entry point of the Christian life. It is the foundation for every step of the journey. Paul made a deliberate decision to know nothing except Jesus Christ and Him crucified, refusing to replace the simple power of the cross with impressive wisdom or complex religious systems. Salvation is not a single moment but an ongoing reality: we were saved, we are being saved, and we will be saved. The same gospel that rescues us carries us all the way home. Nothing needs to be added to it. Jesus has already done enough.

Years ago, we developed a simple motto: Nothing But Jesus. At first glance, that phrase can seem overly simplistic. After all, there are a lot of things the Bible talks about. There are important conversations to be had about morality, politics, family, culture, relationships, social justice, and countless other topics. So why would we choose a motto that narrows our focus down to just three words? Because in this particular moment in the life of the church and in our culture, we felt it was important not only to communicate what our message is, but also what our message is not.

Our message is not primarily about morality, self-improvement, social influence, or behavior modification. Those things may be important, but they are not the heart of Christianity. The gospel is not primarily a message about what we must do for God. It is the announcement of what God has done for us through Jesus Christ. The problem is that over time, that simple message always tends to get buried beneath all sorts of other things. We add expectations, opinions, traditions, performance, guilt, self-improvement projects, and countless other distractions until the simple beauty of the gospel becomes difficult to see.

Many Christians feel intimidated by traditional evangelism, but there's another powerful way to share faith called party evangelism. This happens when unbelievers encounter a community transformed by Jesus and think, I want what they have. Just like people are drawn to parties where others are genuinely enjoying themselves, people are attracted to churches marked by authentic love, grace, and joy. The early church in Acts 2 exemplified this - they celebrated together with glad hearts, and God added to their number daily. Every Christian can participate by contributing to a welcoming, joyful community through greeting others, volunteering, showing up consistently, or simply letting their light shine through everyday interactions.

I have a love-hate relationship with fishing. On one hand, it can be incredibly boring. You sit there for hours waiting for a fish to bite, staring at the water, and hoping something happens. Sometimes you spend an entire morning on the boat and never get so much as a nibble. It can feel like a lot of waiting for very little reward. But when a fish finally takes the bait, everything changes. The rod bends, your heart starts racing, and suddenly all the waiting feels worth it. There’s something exhilarating about the moment you realize you’ve caught one.

In Matthew 4, when Jesus called His first disciples, He said, “Follow me, and I will make you fishers of men.” That image has served as a description of the church’s mission ever since. But how do we participate in that mission?

This Sunday, we’ll continue our series “What We Believe” by taking a closer look at the purpose and mission of the church: Why does the church exist? Why do we gather together every week? What role has God given us in reaching the world around us? And how are we called to carry out that mission?

God's grace extends far beyond our failures and shame. When Peter denied Jesus three times, he isolated himself in shame, just as we do when we fail. But Jesus ran toward Peter, not away from him, appearing to him first after the resurrection. Jesus doesn't rename us according to our worst moments or withdraw His love when we mess up. He knew every sin we would commit before He died for us, and nothing surprises Him or makes Him second-guess His sacrifice. When we fail, we have a choice between listening to hell's accusations or heaven's invitation to come home. God doesn't wait with crossed arms but runs to meet us with celebration, just like the father in the prodigal son story.

This Sunday, we’ll continue our series What We Believe with a message about one of the most important, and often overlooked, truths of the Christian faith. Many people assume Christianity is primarily about becoming a better person, trying harder, and keeping your life together. But what happens when you don’t? What happens when you fail? What happens when you knew better and did it anyway?

One of our core beliefs at Reach Church is that Jesus runs toward people who sin, not away from them. He moves toward the deniers, the cowards, the screw-ups, the repeat offenders, the people who promised, “Never again,” only to find themselves right back where they started. He moves toward the people carrying shame, regret, and the crushing weight of what they’ve done. The good news of the Gospel is not that Jesus only welcomes people who have it all together. The good news is that Jesus pursues the people who don’t.

And that’s good news. Because that’s all of us.
