Over the past few weeks, we’ve seen how the writer of Ecclesiastes searched just about everywhere for something that could give life lasting meaning, satisfaction, and enjoyment. He pursued pleasure. But it wasn’t enough. Then he turned to wisdom. But while he discovered that wisdom is certainly better than foolishness, he was confronted with the reality that both the wise and the fool eventually meet the same end. And tomorrow, we’ll see him wrestle with work. We spend so much of our lives working, building, accomplishing, producing, and trying to leave something behind. But what ultimately comes from all our toil?

After exploring all these different places where we look for meaning, the writer comes to a surprisingly simple conclusion: “There is nothing better for a person than that he should eat and drink and find enjoyment in his toil” (Ecclesiastes 2:24). Martin Luther called this verse the “principal statement” and summary of the entire book. After all the searching, striving, questioning, experimenting, and frustration of Ecclesiastes 2, this is where he lands? - Eat. Drink. Try to enjoy your work.

Tomorrow, we’ll also celebrate Communion together. (Without giving too much away, I believe there is a unique connection between communion and Ecclesiastes 2:24). Bring someone with you as we continue our series, Finding Meaning in the Meaningless, tomorrow at 10am.

About a month ago, I had the privilege of sharing some big news - after years of diligent hard work, we fully completed our insurance settlement from the fire! That settlement allows us to continue moving forward with Phase Two of construction, including our new sanctuary and lobby. There’s a lot happening behind the scenes right now, and we’re lining everything up to begin that work in the next few weeks. But this Sunday, I have another big announcement to share with you. This is an exciting development that will impact our church in a very big, and very good, way. I can’t wait to share the news, celebrate it together, and tell you what will be happening as a result!

We’ll also continue our series through Ecclesiastes, Finding Meaning in the Meaningless. Last week, we watched the writer of Ecclesiastes throw himself into the pursuit of pleasure, only to discover that having everything he wanted ultimately left him empty. This week, he turns his attention to something that seems like a much better place to find meaning: Wisdom. Surely if pleasure can’t give us the meaningful life we’re looking for, then living wisely, making good decisions, and doing life the “right” way will...Or will it?

What initially looks like a much more fulfilling road eventually leads him to another unsettling conclusion, and it raises some important questions about where we’re looking for meaning in our own lives.

It’s going to be an exciting Sunday at Reach, and I really hope you’ll be here for it!

We’re off to a great start in our new series, Finding Meaning in the Meaningless, and over the next three weeks, we’ll be spending our time in Ecclesiastes 2. This Sunday, we’re looking at something every one of us pursues in one way or another - pleasure. There’s nothing inherently wrong with pleasure, or even with pursuing it. Who doesn’t enjoy the pleasures of good food, good times, great vacations, new experiences, good relationships, accomplishments, and all the other good things this life has to offer?

There are pleasures “under the sun” that we’re meant to enjoy. So, contrary to how Ecclesiastes 2 is sometimes understood, pleasure isn’t the problem. Instead, Ecclesiastes invites us to look beneath the surface and ask a much deeper and much more personal question: WHY are we pursuing it? Sometimes we pursue pleasure simply because it’s pleasurable. But sometimes what we’re chasing outwardly reveals something that’s aching inwardly.

This has become one of my favorite messages I’ve ever put together. I believe Ecclesiastes 2 is going to take us somewhere much deeper than we might expect, and I’m really looking forward to sharing with you!
