Hello Rev. Dr. J. L.,
The rights of Black people are under attack in Louisiana. At the Promise of Justice Initiative (PJI), we are a multicultural organization with a dedicated team from all around our community. With this strong foundation, our Black team members created this video statement as a response to the attack on our ability to be full citizens of Louisiana and this country and to affirm our commitment to building the future we all deserve. Please watch our recorded statement below.
Louisianans are fighting on many fronts for our basic rights to exist (including but not limited to):
a federal court's failure to implement any permanent changes or rule on the harm of people forced into modern day slavery at Angola Prison's Farm Line the Louisiana Supreme Court finding that state legislators can "subvert the will of voters" by eliminating elected offices in New Orleans, a majority Black city the governor signing into law a new congressional map that removes a majority Black district the legislature upholding a Jim Crow-era sentencing law designed to reduce Black jurors' power
We have inherited this fight from our living elders of the Civil Rights Movement as well as our ancestors who survived slavery, the Black Codes, the Confederacy, Jim Crow segregation, and who struggled and sacrificed for a better world.
We are in a time that requires a lot of perseverance from our community. This fight belongs to all of us. Stay tuned for ways to jump into the fight and thank you for watching our video.
In Solidarity,
Team PJI
