Be Still, My Soul
Scripture: “For God alone, O my soul, wait in silence, for my hope is from him.” — Psalm 62:5
Thought: As men, we hate sitting still. We are uncomfortable with stillness. We want to be doing. Going. Busy. Thus we stay distracted. We stay entertained. We’ll do anything to avoid the silence. To avoid waiting. To avoid dependence.
Yet the Christian life requires all three. We forget that before we are human doings, we are human beings. God is less concerned with what we are doing and more concerned with who we are becoming. And most often, He uses the quiet to shape us.
Be Still, My Soul was written out of the conviction that God's people must learn to trust Him even when they cannot see/hear/find Him. To trust Him in the quiet, in the waiting.
The Psalmist writes: "For God alone, O my soul, wait in silence." If we’re honest, we would admit that we hate that word “wait.” We hate waiting at red lights. Waiting in traffic. Waiting for our food. Waiting on our wife and kids. Waiting feels like such a waist of time. Yet, some of God's greatest work happens in seasons where we can do nothing but wait on Him.
Abraham waited. Joseph waited. David waited. The disciples waited. Even Jesus waited thirty years before beginning His public ministry.
Brothers, here is what I am learning… Waiting is not wasted time. Waiting is training. Waiting teaches us that God is God and we are not. His timing is better than ours. His plans are wiser than ours. His ways are higher than ours.
Sometimes the most spiritual thing a man can do is stop striving and just wait.
Reflection: Where is God asking you to wait and trust Him rather than control/force the outcome?
Call to Action: Spend ten uninterrupted minutes in silence before the Lord today.
Prayer: “Father, teach me to trust Your timing. Help me rest in Your wisdom and promises when I cannot see the way forward. Amen.”
